The Industrial Revolution

It is the 2nd biggest change in human history. Not every part of the world is not industrialized. It started in 1750 and was welcomed by many people. It lasted a century from 1750 – 1850. It changed the economy. You have good things to sell and trade.


Crafts
-A potter was a skilled profession. Industry is a natural outgrowth of agriculture.
The Surplus
The Market Economy
-Local trading was exchanging goods for others. You can trade gain, salt, etc.
Currency
-It was salt, dollar bills, paper currency and grain. Money is agreed upon.
The Local Market
-You could not move stuff for long distances. It put a limit on everything.
Medieval Expansion
-Fiefdoms, minor kingdoms, and duchies were small so you can access people and things faster.
Bulk Transportation
-Bridges helped a lot.
Craft Industry
-You worked all your life to be an expert at craftsmanship. Human power or animal power made this work. There was also wind power used. A guild was a qualification to provide a service, and the standards were high to get in.
Home Based
-A cabinet worker. They were used to make raw materials: Transportation was a problem. Raw materials varied.
Clothes made of local materials
-They used what they could get.
Served Local Communities
-It was not worth it to produce more goods. People knew how much long they needed to work for stable living conditions.
Effects of Industrial Revolution
-Industry on a mass scale. Wages, factories, rhythm of the clock, urbanization. The economy was driven by trade and not food and shelter. Cities got bigger because people lived close to factories. Exporting and the standard of living rose.
Industry in Britain
-Cotton was imported faster because the steam engine was more practical.
Location of the Industrial Revolution
-It spread around the world fast. It is still spreading. It started in Europe because they were ready for it. They already had an economy of trade. Britain is the leader. They had expertise in tool making, access to fuel (coal). Other countries were developing socially. The steam engine runs on coal. Britain had easy access to coal.
Environment before
-There were no banks and no roads.
Before the Industrial Revolution
-They used wind and water power.
Mining before the Industrial Revolution
-A lot of uses of wood. After they used steal and iron. Mining was important for the industrial revolution to exist.
Flooding is a problem in Mining
-With mining you can pump water out. Using Suction pumps a water wheel would work a crank to a suction pump sucking the water up to the troff and the water was carried away. This was an idea. They thought there was a solution.
The reason was atmospheric pressure
-It is a discovery in the 17th century by Guericke. Showing the tremendous force of the vacuum. Steam engine runs on water. You need to be near water. Steam comes from water. Water expands to steam. When you condense it back to water you will have a small amount of water.
Steam Pump
-Beginning of the 18th century. The problem was it had a meter limit. There was a lot of dust that could Ignite. It was not safe.
James Watt
-is a young man from Scotland. He was an instrument maker. He studied in London. He repaired instruments at university. He was given a model steam engine and he saw a problem with it. His invention was patented so he went back into business. His idea is to condense the water in different place.
