The Industrial Revolution

It all started in England a long time ago…

Hello reader and welcome to my very brief view of the Industrial Revolution, I’ll call it IR for short. I just learned this amazing revolution in school and thought that i might write something about it. So here’s something that you guys just might be interested in. Hope you guys like it. This letter is a little description on the farmers’ lives in villages during the IR.

Dear friend,

As you know, during the 1700s and 1800s, many innovations in agriculture and industry caused changes in people’s way of life dramatically. People were able to stay in their house and make many more times more amount of woolen. Coal miners worked on both the coal field during the winter and farmland during the harvest time. However, the village life still revolved mostly around farming. Farmers rented lands from the landowners to farm. Some poorer farmers farmed on the common lands, which were less fertile. The economy and trade of a village was limited because the geography made transportation hard and unprofitable. Because of that, villages were self-sufficient. Villagers grew enough crops to ensure their people from starvation. People worked hard in these villages. Most of them have two jobs for a steadier income and to support their families.

  • Industrial Revolution: A period of innovations in agriculture and industry led to economic and social change throughout Europe. New machineries increased the speed of production which improved the economy. Steadier income was made possible for the people and even during harsh season and the harvest was bad; people would still have money to buy food and necessities.
  • Domestic system: A system depended on a network of workers. An example for domestic system was making wool. Merchants hired workers to produce woolens in their own home, and the merchants bring the woolens to other workers for shaping and dying. The system benefited many workers. Women and children could also earn some extra money at home working. Coal mining was also included in the system. Coal miners would spend their money on goods from nearby towns where they could not make for themselves.
