The Loss of a Legend

As if more then enough hasn’t been written about the great ship and her legend, I’m trying my hand at it. Just attempting to perfect my writing skills as a storyteller as it is not done overnight.

growing as we speak.

******

But now the ship itself has been discussed without me going into every

minor or major detail, a part of me wonders about the people involved.

Captain E.J Smith was the captain of the Titanic and this was supposed

to be his last voyage. He was supposed to retire and be with his family

instead of dying on that April night. Margaret “Molly” Brown made it to one

of the lifeboats and watched the Titanic sink. But was also known later as the

“Unsinkable Molly Brown” after the sinking. What wasn’t known at that time

is that her friends actually called her “Maggie”. John Jacob Astor was a

millionaire with a young wife and a baby on the way. His wife Madeline made

it off the boat, but John died that night and faded into Titanic history. John

wasn’t around to see his son John Jacob Astor the second. Thomas Andrews

was in charge of building the Titanic and was aboard her on April 12th. He

was portrayed as a irreplaceable hero that gave up his life for a woman and

child to have a seat on a lifeboat. Bruce Ismay was the managing director of

the White Star Line Steamships. While it was true he survived the Titanic

sinking, his reputation was never the same after that. Bruce was either

thought of a coward for saving his life or a scapegoat for his many enemies.

These are but a few of the survivors or causalities of the tragic loss of the Titanic

that April night. They all have a story to tell if we only could hear what they said,

their recovered artifacts has to be their voices since they cant talk now.

****

The legend of the Titanic and those who went down with her will forever be a

part of history. Thanks to her tragedy, there are now enough lifeboats on any

ship then and now that sails the seas. Those who survived the sinking probably

never saw life the same after going through all that. I close with what E.J Smith

said:

“when anyone asked me how I can best describe my experience in nearly forty

years at sea, I merely say uneventful. of course there has been winter gales,

and storms and and the like. But in all my experience, I have never been in

any accident….or any sort worth speaking about.I have seen but one vessel

in distress in all my years at sea. I never saw a wreck and never have been

wrecked nor was I ever in any predicament that threatened to end in any

disaster of the sort.” Captain E.J Smith ,Captain of the RMS Titanic.

The now famous captain had no way of knowing that his final sea journey

would be the cause of his passing . And a place in the Titanic legendary

history for as long as there is an interest in the fabled ship.

A very well written and researched article Payge. Many movies and books have been written about this tragedy, but it still remains one of the most talked about and discussed tragedies of our time. Well done friend.

    Interesting article.
It seems that fate cruelly decided to liven up Captain E. J. Smilth\’s, till then, rather dull life on the high seas.

Ha Ha, when I saw the title, I automatically thought this was an article on Michael Jackson.

You know because some people are still talking about it…
