About 1,900 years ago, the Italian city of Rome had fine temples and statues, busy streets, and bustling markets. It was the center of a mighty empire. Roman soldiers marched across Europe, Asia, and North Africa. They carried iron swords and spears, and fought many battles. Wherever the Romans went, they built along, straight roads and fine new towns. They traded in wheat, wine, potter, and wool. The Romans spoke a language called Latin. They wrote poetry and history books that we still read today.
Julius Ceasar- Was a brilliant Roman soldier. He became leader in 34 BC but was stabbed to death five years later.
Cruel sports- The Romans liked to watch cruel sporting displays in which fighters called gladiators killed each other.
