The Most Notable Plane Crash Deaths

When there is a large scale plane crash it usually is brought to the nation’s attention and creates quite a stir. Plane crashes are scary and so is death, no one wants people to die and planes destroyed but regardless it is interesting to the masses. The only thing that can make a plane crash more interesting is if a fatality is a famous person. This is a list of notable famous people killed by aviation.

Listed in order of occurrence.

Amelia Earhart

40, aviator

Disappeared on overseas aviation flight. Presumed dead, plane never found. Theory is that plane ran out of fuel and she had to ditch it in the ocean.

Glenn Miller

40, band leader and musician

Disappeared over the English Channel. Army Transport plane hit accidentally by incoming bombs.

Buddy Holly, 22

One of the pioneers of Rock and Roll

Crashed in snow storm on the way to a performance. Killed along with band members Ritchie Vallens and the Big Bopper.

Patsy Cline

30, county western singer

Plane entered a storm. The pilot was not qualified or trained at all for flying in bad conditions. Plane crashed.

Roberto Clemente

38, baseball player, Pittsburgh outfielder

On a relief mission to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Crashed after take off when engine failed due to poor maintenance.

Ronnie Van Zant

29, lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd

Killed along with three other band members. Plane crashed into wooded area due to lack of fuel and a malfunctioning engine

Thurman Munson

32, baseball player, N.Y. Yankee catcher

Crashed near runway. He was practicing his landing skills. Only person on board not enough flight experience therefore he stalled the plane.

Stevie Ray Vaughan

35, blues guitarist

Crashed head on into a hill due to pilot error. Pilot took of into fog and didn’t achieve enough altitude to rise above the hill. All aboard killed.

John F. Kennedy Jr.

38, son of President Kennedy

Plane piloted by Kennedy and due to lack of flight experience he lost control of the plane over the ocean. His wife and sister in law were on board.
