The Parthenon structure was considered as the most important surviving building that was constructed in the classical Greece. It is also considered as the culmination of the development of the Doric order.
The decorative sculptures of the Parthenon is greatly considered as one of the highest points in the Greek art.
It is considered as the enduring symbol of the ancient Greek and Athenian Democracy and is also considered as one of the greatest cultural monuments in the world. The Parthenon was use as a treasury like most of the Greek temples of the ancient times. It serves as the treasury in the time of the Delian League. The Parthenon was converted into a Christian church that was dedicated to Virgin Mary on 6th century A.D.(eleven2)

In 1460’s, it was turned into a mosque after the conquest of the ottoman Turk.
On September 1687 some of the surviving sculpture of the Parthenon was removed by the ignition of some Ottoman Turk ammunition dump inside the building. It was ignited by Venetian Thomas Bruce, the 7th earl of Elgin with the permission of the Ottoman Turk.

In the year 1816, the remove sculptures were sold to the British Museum in London where they are now displayed, they are known as the Elgin Marbles or the Parthenon marbles.
