The Progressive Movement

The progressive movement was a beneficial and a victorious movement. The progressive movement aimed to specifically alleviate the problems created by the industrial revolution, also known as the “reform movement“. During the late 1800’s and the early 1900’s many children, women and families suffered from poverty, poor operational conditions, spousal rape, and metropolitan decay.
Journalists and writers exposed the unsafe working conditions factory workers, and their families had to work in. disease and crime were also a problem in many cites so the progressives thought that business needed stricter regulations regarding children while others put their efforts into reforming city governments. Every progressive reform movement had at least one of the four goals protecting social welfare, promoting moral improvement, creating economic reform, and fostering efficiency. Many social welfare reformers strove to relive urban problems. To effectively fix urban problems many social groups opened up, such as the Young ,Men’s Christian Association, also known as the (YMCA). These associations opened new doors to the community by crating library’s, built swimming pools, making baseball fields. And sponsored education classes. Another progressive group that still stands today is the Salvation Army. This group helped feed the poor, cared for children in nurseries, and sent out slum brigades to convert underprivileged immigrants into hard working middle class citizens These groups helped to make the progressive movement a success.
Some reformers felt that morality and not the work place was the key to success to to helping the lives of the unfortunate. Prohibition, the banning pf alcoholic beverages was a such a program that reformers offered to uplift immigrants and poor corrupt citizens.
In 1873 the Women’s Christian temperance union (WCTU) in Chicago promoted the goal of prohibition, members sophisticated their cause by going into saloons singing and praying and influenced saloon keepers to stop selling alcohol. Writer who wrote about the corrupt side of business and public life during the early 20th in mass circulation magazines became acknowledged as nutcrackers. When the governments became known of the harsh situation of cites and workplaces they put new regulations, and rules in place to help reform America.
