The Robber Barons

The Robber Barons were thieves who raised their form of thievery to sound business organizations and called them "trusts." They still operate today and accumulate enormous wealth at the expense of the taxpayer. Corruption reached its zenith when the railways were being built westward. Andrew Carnegie provided the steel, J.P. Morgan provided the cash, and together they accumulated untold wealth and power through corruption.

It was an era when politics took a backseat to a genius expressed in accumulating and holding more private wealth and power than had been possessed in history. An illustration of this power was the financier John P. Morgan who traded gold to an almost bankrupt government in 1895 for U.S. bonds which he promptly sold at an enormous profit. The accumulation of great wealth in the hands of a few is nothing new, since colonial times a minority has held a vast majority of the country’s wealth. But the nineteenth century brought this concentration of wealth to an incredible high.

After the civil war when land in the west opened up the great migration west began. Four basics things were needed, tools, labor, steel and capital to build the railroads. Andrew Carnegie provided the steel. Immigrants provided cheap labor. And J.P. Morgan the banker, provided the cash. With unlimited vistas of western land the plan to connect east to west by railway provided unlimited schemes to bilk the Treasury. Corruption reared it’s ugly head with the exposure of the Credit Mobilier Scandal in 1872.

Massachusetts congressman Oakes Ames was a shovel maker, and one of the directors of the Union Pacific Railroad, the company building the railway west. Ames and the Union Pacific created the Credit Mobilier of America, which was awarded all construction contracts. The company was paid $94 million by Congress while the job only cost $44 million. Ames smoothed the way in Washington by spreading around shares of Mobilier stock, including some to President Grant’s first and second term Vice Presidents, The Union Pacific did the same thing, winning land grants, contracts, and huge over payments.

Bribes were paid by towns that wanted the railroad to run through them, and millions of acres were given away to Union Pacific as gifts. Grant’s terms were a boom for the corruptible. There was also the Whiskey Ring scandal, that defrauded the government of millions in taxes with the assistance of the Treasury Department and Grant’s secretary, Orville Babcock. In the Bureau of Indian Affairs kickbacks were rampant all the way down the line. All this was still small change compared to the fortunes being made by the great thieves of the generation the so called Robber Barons, Jay Gould, Vanderbilt, Morgan, Carnegie, and Rockefeller.

Corrupt statesmen were the most notorious of all criminals. You may curse and shoot robbers trespassing to steal from your homes but these class of robbers we unconsciously pay our tribute through taxes we hardly noticed. And they just sit there on a nice office after winnning votes, making policies that get something from every penny we earn through hard toil. I must say if possible, convicted politicians should be penalized by firing squad for abuse of public trust. A nice post, Ruby.

The Green crowd are trying to emulate this method to riches today. Falsely scaring the public into funding their wealth through Green projects.

Ruby, good piece. If you like that sort of history, check out the ‘Ames brothers’. Their had a monument built in their name for their contribution to the railway. It is a small pyramid structure on the high plains between Cheyenne and Laramie. After it was built, their true colors were exposed.
    Thanks,

An eye opener and rather a bold venture. But it all happens in a democratic country like US or India, where corruption is rampant. It also shows how far the political system requires an overhauling and even more stringent laws and provisions to prevent the emergence of such thieves. Thanks for sharing.

Good stuff, Ruby, as usual…Trustbuster Pres. Teddy Roosevelt slowed these guys down in early 1900’s (book “T Rex” explains) as he knew these folks were way out of control. Another big name famous American business man (bootlegger) Joe Kennedy comes to mind. Off topic but I never quite understood the American infatuation with the Kennedys, including the latest one to go plus their goofy kids that continue to hold government positions that we tax payers fund.

Great article, reminds me of the book “Meet You in Hell” which defines your argument very well. So Maddoff was the only robber baron that managed to rob people and misplace everything without actually giving anything back to society. Many people like John Hopkins donated everything they had to charities.
