The Roman Army
This is an informational report about the Roman Army.
The Roman army fought a lot of battles. The Roman army had plenty of equipment because of their massive wealth.
In 396 BC a bigger fighting force was needed. Before that the soldiers were only volunteers, so they began to pay soldiers. This market the start of Rome’s professional army. The Roman army before 396 BC was all made up of volunteers, mostly farmers.
Most of the battles were short so the soldiers just went back to their normal lives as soldiers. We don’t know when the volunteer armies started but the official army started in 396 BC. Rome needed an army so they could start taking over other countries. They wanted the power over as many countries as they could take. probably out of greed.
The Roman army was extremely organized. It was one of the most organized armies that ever existed. All Roman soldiers were ranked. They moved in groups called centuries, cohorts and legions. A century was made up of 80-100 men, a cohort was made up of 6 centuries and a legion was made up of 10 cohorts.
The Roman Army was a very powerful force.
