The Story Behind Levi Strauss

The Story Behind Levi Strauss.

Levi Strauss came to San Fransisco in 1853 during the California Gold Rush, intending to start a dry goods business.Shortly after his arrival,a miner wanted to know what Mr.Strauss was selling. When Strauss told him he had rough canvas to use for tents and wagon covers, the prospector said,”You should have brought pants”!saying he couldn’t find a pair of pants strong enough to last.

So,Levi Strauss had the canvas made into what he called’waist overalls’.To make them fit properly, the wearer had to sit in a watering trough so that the pants shrank to a perfect fit.Miners liked the pants, but complained that they tended to chafe.Levi Strauss substituted a twilled cotton cloth from France called ’serge de Nimes’.The fabric later became known as denim, and the pants were nicknamed blue jeans.

By 1950,Levi’s jeans began selling nationally.Everybody now had a chance to wear a pair of original Levi’s jeans,as they were now called.Later, many other brands emerged, but Levi’s have remained the all time favourite, bringing frame and glory to Levi Strauss.

LOL, yes. Levi Strauss was one of the many, many pioneers who truly struck it rich in California–because they were willing to be flexible and color outside the lines as they say. For it turns out that most of the people (after the initial gold rush) who made a fortune were the people who were able to sell the miners the things they needed. Miners, by and large, were not businessmen. So even if they did strike it rich (and many did) odds were that they would immediately spend their new found riches on booze and women. So in the end the people who made a lasting fortune were the business types like Strauss.
