Leytonstone in London, the birth place of one David Robert Joseph Beckham. Where would English football have been without him. More or less in the same mess we’ve been with him I expect.

May 2nd 1982
British nuclear submarine HMS Conqueror sinks the Argentine light cruiser ARA General Belgrano in the midst of the Falklands conflict. The Belgrano was described as a ‘vintage’ vessel. In a former life it had been called the USS Phoenix and had survived the attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941.

Harry Lillis Crosby is born in Tacoma Washington. The story behind how he became to be known as ‘Bing’ is remarkably complicated and relates to an incident which took place in 1910. Intrigued? I wouldn’t be if I were you.

Anne Boleyn is arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London. Accused of adultery, incest and high treason the Queen (Henry VII’s second wife) was be-headed just seventeen days later.

Pronounced ‘soo-shay’ we can only be referring to David Suchet , born in London the actor has been playing Agatha Chritie’s Poirot on our TV screens since 1989. Earlier in 1985 he had played the role of Inspector Japp in the film ’Thirteen at Dinner’ (Lord Egdeware Dies) how plain ’wrong’ does that seem now?

The magazine ‘Good Housekeeping’ was founded by Clark W Bryan in Massachusetts. An English edition was finally found to be necessary in 1922. A quick search on the www will soon lead you to a site where all 262 pages of the February 1926 issue can be viewed.

Brian Charles Lara is born in Santa Cruz, Trinidad and Tobago. Which doesn’t mean he was born in three separate places! The ‘Prince’ retired from Test Cricket in 2006 with almost 12,000 to his name. Who could forget his top score of 400 not out in 2004. Not us that’s for sure.

Saw the death of actor Oliver Reed (aged 61) of a sudden heart attack whilst filming ‘Gladiator’ in Valletta, Malta. Reportedly at the time of death he had run up a night’s bar bill of $866
