The Truth About Rhodesia Modern Day Zimbabwe

by TrishTaylor in History, December 22, 2008

Once known as the “The bread basket of Africa”, with the strongest economy amongst most African countries, this nation is at the verge of collapse having suffered the worst misrule of all decades. So what exactly is the truth of the life in this country.

For most families, the way to survive has taken people to great lengths for doing anything to earn a meal. Desperate measures is the way of life in Zimbabwe with inflation is at a rise of over 200 million percent.

 Health

With the economy in free fall and medical staff leaving in droves, Zimbabwe’s health system is unable to cope.  The government has spent so much money corruptly rather than investing with clean water supply for its people.  The nation is coping with constant water rationing,  power cuts, as the electricity is generated from neighbouring countries with the government not able to pay all their debts. More than 1200 people have died from the cholera outbreak which has hit the country because of poor water sanitation and clean drinking water.  Corpses lie unclaimed for weeks in morgues because no one can fund, making enquiries of their family’s whereabouts.  The Cholera outbreak has already spread into neighbouring countries where people are rushing to seek for help.  With a third of Zimbabwean population affected with HIV, related diseases are now killing the sick because of lack of treatment and medication.  Uncontrolled sexual activities are at a high, with most young girls having to rely on older men for their well being. This interaction has now seriously promoted the spread of HIV in the country.

Food/money shortages

Basic  commodities are very difficult to find in local supermarkets.  Most of the locals has engaged themselves in to crossborder buying and selling of groceries from neighbouring countries, as a way of earning foreign currency.  Most retail shops have now resorted to using the USD for purchases as the local currency has lost value, and  the country’s inflation is on the rise at over 200 million percent.  The banks keep printing money to keep up with the inflation, offering daily limits that can hardly buy a loaf of bread.  Money shortages have caused riots as people cannot withdraw their wages.

Migration

With half of the population of Zimbabwe having migrated to outside countries to seek work,  Zimbabwe has lost the working class to countries like America,  Britain, and Australia.  Families have been affected with this migration with children split from their parents.  All they get is some money sent through to them.  The bond between families have been broken, which can never be compensated by money.  Zimbabwean working abroad have contributed seriously to the black market  trading of currencies, offering higher rates which change drastically and the banks are not able to match.  With the depreciation of the Zimbabwe dollar, no one is now banking their money as it would be valueless within a day.

The rich and the poor

The situation in Zimbabwe has split the nation into two categories.  The rich people now use the situation as a way to carry out illegal dealings and multiply their currencies with the help of corrupted government officials.  The poor people have deteriorated so much and have little hope for survival,  all they get is help offered by charity organisations in the country, allocation food to various parts of the country.   The education sector has collapsed with School teachers going on strike requesting better pay in foreign currency.  Pupils have not taken exams with the ministry of education failing to provide adequate materials.  The farming sector has totally collapsed with the white farmers eviction from their farms and no replacement by agricultural expertise, which the country was accustomed to and contributed to the downfall of the economy.  Farming  was one of the countries foreign currency earner.  Tourism has also been affected with most tourist not visiting the country due to the political situation going on.  The mining sector has been affected as most mines have now closed, what is really the end of this nation, no one knows, as we all sit and watch the collapse of once the best nation is Africa
