The Worst Hurricanes in U.S. History
Hurricanes seem to be forming much faster these last few years, and with deadly consequences. These are some of the worst in recorded history.
Not only affecting where they come in but other parts of the country as well. Gas prices, insurance and more have been affected by these horrible storms. Here is a list of the top 5 worst known hurricanes in United States history.
Galveston, Texas: 1900
The deadliest hurrican in U.S. history came in as a Category4 on Sept. 8, 1990. Winds peaked at 150mph and waves as high as 15 feet. Estimated deaths were estimated from 8,000 to 12,000 people. It was at this time Galveston built their seawall. The wall stood at 17 feet high and ran 3 miles long.
Florida: 1928
Hitting landfall in Lake Okeechobee as a Category 4 this storm had winds at 150mph. Flood waters in some areas rose over 20 feet deep. Death tolls were estimated at 2500 and damages around $25 million.
Florida Keys: 1935
Having made landfall on Sept. 2 1935 (Labor Day) this is said to be the most intense hurrican to make landfall in U.S. history. A Category 5 with winds at 155mph and a storm surge of 18 feet. Estimated loss of life was 450 and property damage around $6 million.
Hurricane Audrey: 1957
Audrey came ashore on June 27 1957 on the Texas, Louisiana border. A Category 4 with a 12 foot storm surge and winds at 145mph. Property damage was around $1 million. This disaster killed around 600 people and left 400,000 homeless.
Southeast U.S.: 1926
Landfall was widespread coming into Fort Lauderdale, Miami and surrounding cities. A huge storm said to be 60 miles wide with winds at 140mph. As many as 800 lost their lives on Sept. 18 1926 with property damage in today’s dollars at $159 million +.
These are very scary numbers and I only can pray that these top storms are not replaced with new dates in the future.
