Titanic “Death of a Dream”
The greatest ship ever built, and how it crashed.
Titanic was the greatest ship ever built at her time. Built in Belfast, owned by the White Star Line and stet sail form Southampton on April the 10Th, 1912. But little did the passengers know that they were set to hit an iceberg.
We in class have looked at 3 sources and thought that the source that gets closest to the truth of what happened to the Titanic is the documentary.
The newspaper tells us the obvious that is had crashed into an iceberg and she was a ‘helpless giant’. She had flashed out messaged for help and many streamers rushed to her aid. One of the ships was called ‘Virginian’. However in this newspaper it says ‘EVERYONE SAFE’ or ‘every soul was safe’ which is thought to be incorrect, as we all know from the facts now that not even half the amounts of passengers on that ship were saved. From the time line source ‘she carried 705 survivors’. This statement has already showed it is not so relied upon. Also it suggests that the ship was being towed to port by Allan Liner. But we all know now that it had sunk to the bottom of the sea from the time line source ‘sinking into the sea’, so yet it had lied again, and decreased its reliability. If these facts were true, which I argue it isn’t, and then it doesn’t tell us how all the passengers were saved, whether by life boats or by the ship not sinking.
It does not tell us about the facts such as where was it sailing to in the first place or how did it hit the iceberg and whose fault was it. These show that the newspaper haven’t got the entire story and have lost fact on the way making it unreliable.
The factors of that could affect the reliability of the source might be, why it’s made? It might have been made to sell for money, and if the had exaggerated the truth to make it seem more interesting then more people might want to buy their paper and make money. However why would they want to do that when later on they have to report that they were wrong and lose their reputation of their company. We can argue that a newspapers loyalty lies with telling the truth and that is what people pay for, so the should be loyal to the customers. This may depend on if the boss at the time was fair or not.
