To Study History: or Not

“History is to the community as memory is to the individual.” A.Marwick. Why should we study history?

The most important reason to learn history is because one finds it interesting. After Hitler’s era people wanted to learn about his concentration camps and what had happened. People often go to Auschwitz to learn about it, and when they do they usually get chills. In the story Night by Elie Wiesel he explains his encounter with Nazis in the concentration camps. This story while very interesting is also very depression. People would not usually read a depressing historical fiction boook unless they find the event it is based on interesting. People can use history for inspiration also. Much like Revolutionary’s affect on civil war, Civil rights influenced the women’s movement. Women learned that if African Americans could fight for their rights than they should do the same. They used similar tactics to earn their right to vote and be equal. Many of the famous historical changes in time were because of base events that influenced them. Along with this theory comes the domino effect in that what happens is based on “causes”. People learn about history often because they want to and that is the best reason.

This quote “History is to the community as memory is to the individual.” is a correct statemtn. It serves as a reminder of the events that happened in the past that can help to explain one’s identity. People also learn about history because it can help people understand other cultures and their differences and make them proud of who they are It can also be studied because it can prepare them for the real life because history reapeats itself. Of all the reasons to study history, the best reason is because they want to.

Personally, I find that the history taught at schools is inadequate, not in content but in the manner of teaching. They are just taught, no lessons are imbibed…
