Versailles, Part Two
Part two on Versailles in France.
The Palace of Versailles and its gardens cost an enormous sum of money. The people of France resented the fact that their tax money had been spent on a lavish palace.
When the French Revolution began in 1789, King Louis XVI and his family were forced to leave Versailles. The palace was never again used as a residence.
Today, the Palace of Versailles is a national museum. Visitors can walk through the rooms of the palace and admire the elegant sculptues in the beautiful formal gardens that lie at the back of the palace. The Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I, was signed between Germany and the Allied Powers in the great Hall of Mirrors at Versailles.
