Veteran’s Day Essay – Dearest Grandfather
An essay I wrote for my English class that was mean to be a letter to my grandfather who fought in Korea and died in 2010. Rest in peace RLN.
As you may know, Veteran’s Day is coming up on the 11th of November. I would just like to take this time to thank you for serving our country during a time when we needed the protection. I know that you were drafted into the army, but you still fought for the country that you love. You are a true patriot of this country
A patriot is “someone who shows the love of their own country.” You showed your love for the USA when you fought for our freedom, and our rights to life, liberty, and property. There were many of your fellow soldiers that did not come back from the Korean war, which is why we need the 11th to celebrate all of the men and women that did make it back. You went through a lot during that time, and most people, even though we are all patriots in our own way, would not have been able to muster up enough courage to join.
I find it intriguing that even though it seemed at the time the the government was turning against you when they had you drafted, you still went along and fought for the same people you hated. This shows just how much of a patriot and a hero to the country you are. You still defended our rights and freedom, even though you were doing it because someone told you to.
You, along with all other veterans, are all heroic patriots in the eyes of your country. Through thick and thin, you all have protected us from the opposing forces, all throughout history. While we have Memorial Day to mourn for those lost, we have Veteran’s Day to celebrate the people that have survived the war physically. Thank you again for being there when your country needed you.
