Victorian Toys

What did Victorian children play with?

Rich Children

Rich Children had nurseries with expensive toys and games.

  • Rocking Horses
  • Dolls Houses with miniature furniture
  • China or wax dolls
  • Clockwork train sets
  • Toy Soldiers
  • Marbles
  • Draughts
  • Chess
  • Yo-yo’s
  • Puppets

The rich were also taken on holiday and to see shows and musicians.

Poor Children

Poor children often did not own toys but shared toys within the street.

  • Dolls made from rags and scraps
  • Hoops and sticks (a hoop would be rolled down the street using a stick to push it)
  • Hopscotch – a grid scratched onto the street with a stone
  • Footballs – made from rags
  • Bats – made from pieces of wood
