Victory at Last
"Though sorrow cometh at night but joy comes in the morning".This saying is attributed to the sheer determination and resilience put on display by the Arab nations of Tunisia and Egypt in ousting their sit-tight leaders after weeks of mass
protests.
In recent weeks, the world media has been engaged reporting minute to minute happenings concerning the civil unrest in most Arab nations which has so far generated a huge frenzy in the globe. The uprising in the region kicked-off in Tunisia.Tunisia a country blessed with both human and natural resources to boast of elected into office Mr Zine El Abidine Ben-Ali to lead the country to greater heights and provide both infrastructural and economic plans that would position the country in the world’s map.And for 23 years he ruled to the delight of some and displeasure of others.Recently accusations of sorts such as the use of power to suppress oppositions, censoring the media and arresting activists who criticize his government had be frowned at by concerned citizens and this developments has drawn the attention of the international community. But Mr Ben Ali tried to redeem himself by providing a reasonable quality of life for his people. This move did not pay-off for long as the country most recently is experiencing high level inflation and unemployment problems which is hitting hard on the masses. While the masses are groaning, reports making the rounds indicate that the president’s household are tending to lavish spending and acquisition of properties around the globe. The masses totally abhorred this development. The chain of protests sprang up when a desperate unemployed graduate immolated himself and from thence the people of Tunisia took to protesting and for weeks they clamored for the end of rule of Mr Ben Ali and all his cabinet members. In the end the voices of the masses prevailed, the president resigned and fled the country with his family to a neighboring Arab country.Tunisia’s uprising inspired the civil unrest that rocked the country of Egypt. Egypt’s leader Mr Hosni Mubarak stepped into office since 1981 after the assassination of late president Anwar Sadat. Mr Mubarak’s regime has been associated with rings of abuses ranging from torture by police officers on civil activists, harassment of political opponents, violence against demonstrators and arbitrary detention. The people of Egypt took to the streets to protest in order to bring an end to Mr Mubarak’s 30-year rule of the country, though he had earlier promised to step-down peacefully after his tenure. But the masses wanted his resignation sooner to avoid foul plays.Once again, after 3 weeks of protests and chains of mass hysteria, the president bowed to the voices of the people and tendered-in his resignation. This is indeed a sweet victory for the people.Going by the victories recorded in both countries, one can only hope that other governments associated with sit-tight rulership can learn from this once ugly situations to avert chaos and disorder that this issues generate. For in the end the voice of the people is far stronger than the position of one man.
