Vietnam: The Lost War

by TonyBear in History, November 20, 2009

The United States engaged in a war that did not in any way endanger the lives of American citizens. Even the foreign affairs agency admitted that Vietnam did not inflict any harm on Americans. However, the idea of spreading communism is enough to send Americans to war. After years of peace the American government shatters everything when they began to ship soldiers off to war. Along with my disapproval of the war, Americans also did not want the war to go on. This can be seen at the Kent University incident where students were so upset by the war that they began to burn down buildings. The power behind anti war is very strong and is something that I agree with.

When American soldiers came home, they were greeted not very nicely unlike WWII. When soldiers came back from WWII, soldiers were met with flowers and the love of their fellow Americans. But the Vietnam War made many people upset so when soldiers came back, even they were ashamed of how the public would look at them. Those who were lucky to come back knew how horrible it was in Vietnam. The number of dead Americans was very high. Because the war was not popular and left many Americans dead, citizens began to wonder what these American soldiers were dying for. Because of this idea, I am against the war.

The Vietnam War disturbed a period in time known as the happy days. The general public was in a time of their life where war was not an issue. Many people wanted to keep it this way unless it was absolutely necessary. The Vietnam War is not something that is necessary. When the government imposed the draft, many people tried everything they could in order to find ways around it. The famous boxer publicly stood up against the draft and even went to jail for it. This just shows how passionately people are against the war.

I can see why many Americans were unhappy when the United States decided to fight in Vietnam. If I lived in that time period, I would probably be one of the many teens who stand up and fight against this war. The Vietnam War was not the right thing to do because we lost many Americans lives to prevent communism from spreading. In the end, the government backed out and communism spread. This just shows how all of the efforts that American soldiers were put to waste and how we should have never fought in the war in the first place.
