Was It a Good Time to be Living in Britain in the Medieval Times?
This is a two page four paragraph description of the type of life for the rich, poor, childhood and marriage in the medieval times. All pictures have been taken from google.
Poor
It wasn’t a good time to be living in Britain if you were poor because of the many problems such as rising population. Henry VIII closed down all the monasteries so the poor had nowhere to go if homeless which they could become because of the rising population because there wasn’t enough jobs around. If you weren’t employed for 3 days, you were marked as a vagrant and branded with a V. You will be a slave for two years to the person who reported you. In return, you would have bread and water and if you disobey your master, you shall be whipped with iron rings around your legs. If you run away twice, you will be executed. If a vagrant hasn’t got a lawful reason for how he earns money, he shall be stripped and whipped in the streets until his body turns bloody. If you got caught begging, you were also a vagrant. Things did change for the better because the law changed to deserving poor, people who were poor as a result of a natural disaster and idle poor, people who deliberately avoided work and live off others. Begging is also against the law.

Rich
For many rich people, the sixteenth and seventieth century was a time of peace and lots of new houses were built. Some were built of stone and brick instead of wood. Inside, many of the rooms had wooden panels on the walls instead of tapestries in medieval times. Floor was usually made of stone except in the servant’s area where it was cobbles or stone. Ceilings in the main living room were plastered with nice patterns and fireplaces became more usual. Kitchens had large ones. Dogs were bred to run in wheels tom make fire. Hot ashes were thrown in to make the dogs run faster. People got more private so they didn’t live in the same large hall. There were separate rooms for resting, sleeping and eating and they slept in four poster. People had less furniture than today. People weren’t hygienic. The toilet was a wooden set. You weren’t aloud to leave the table when people were eating so people had to urinate in their boots. People normally ate at midday but then breakfast was introduced at 9.a.m and supper at 10.p.m. Things changed because people got more hygienic.
