Was Josef Mengele – Angel of Death – Responsible for Twins of Brazil?
There is still no convincing scientific explanation of the Brazil Twin phenomenon. In reality genetics and environmental factors might the main cause.
Candido Godoi is a small town in Brazil inhabited by German immigrants. High rate of twin’s births is reported in this town. Around 7000 twins live in this town. Argentine historian Jorge Camarasa came out with a theory about births on decades-old mystery. In his book titled “MENGELE”. Dr. Mengele was a chief doctors at the Birkenau extermination camp in Poland where he used Jewish prisoners in fertility experiments. His aim was to provide more Aryans to populate Hitler’s “Thousand Year Reich”. Dr. Mengele lived in disguise South America after Second World War as he was hunted by Israel secret agents MOSSAD for his war crimes. According to Camarasa, Dr. Mengele in 1960s continued his twin experiments in Candido Godoi town. Camarasa interviews with locals reveled it was Dr. Mengele who gave them drugs or hormones and collected blood samples from them. They were able to recognize him though photographs.

But according to Schuler-Faccini study funded by the Brazilian government reveled that this twin phenomenon existed even before 1927. According to the town’s baptismal records, long before Dr. Mengele’s supposed arrival in Candido Godoi. Records say there was no abnormal rise in twin’s birth in 1960s. Even now the high rate of twin births continues today. This study contradicts Camarasa theory. Genetic engineering was at infant stage in 60s. Gary Steinman an expert in twinning says that if Mengele did inject special hormones it will have effect for only one generation.
Founder effect may be one of the causes. Researcher has found that a small group of eight families settled in Linha Sao Pedro district in the early 20th century and the remained isolated from others for generations. Perhaps one or two members of these families that started Linha Sao Pedro could have a genetic trait to have twin births. Scientists are still tiring to find out which gene or genes are responsible for human twinning. Another theory suggests that environmental factors like town’s water, food, or air may responsible for Candido Godoi’s twin phenomena. Some studies caution that women who consume excess milk and eat more dairy produce are more destined to give to birth to twins. There is still no convincing scientific explanation of the Brazil Twin phenomenon. In reality genetics and environmental factors might the main cause.

I really like this topic about twins. It’s very interesting that there’s a place where has a lot of twins.

Very interesting write up, and while I agree with your conclusion that it was a combination of genetics and environment, not Mengele’s experiments that is responsible for this phenomenon, look at the fact that epigenetic factors can persist through three (or more?) generations. So actually, Mengele’s hormone injections could possibly have influenced future generations for two or so down the line. It is a fascinating field, and has to do with the switching on/off of genes.
Good food for thought.

Very interesting discussion. Liked it. Here’s one similarly observed in India:
