Water From a Tap and Other Great Inventions… (1)
Inventions…
Every now and then, I like to continue my series on the history of the great inventions of the 20th century. So far we have seen hiow, after years of writing with the large and complicated apparatus of the word processor, the world was transformed by the invention of something infinitely cheaper, more mobile and more adaptable: the pencil.
On the sporting front we have witnessed how the dreary “exercise bike” gave way to the “bycicle”. It is hard to believe it now but , in days gone by, people used to sit inside, often in windowless gyms, pedalling nowhere on “exercise bikes”. Which were fixed to the ground. Overnight, the invention of the bycicle allowed them to get outdoors and travel under their own steam to all sorts of places. And at home we have seen howhuman relations were transformed by the arrival of the telephone that could by answered by any person, speaking “live”, rather than through the odl-fashioned “recorded message”.
