Watergate
By Tucker Swartz
On June 17, 1972 lights go on at the Watergate building and 5 men are caught in the democratic offices located there.
My report is on the Watergate scandal which led to President Nixon resigning. The Watergate scandal began when five men broke into the democratic office in the Watergate building, were caught, and put into jail. When they went to court the judge offered them a lawyer but they already had one which was weird because most burglars don’t already have lawyers.
Two reporters from the Washington Post named Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein were working on the Watergate story. They found out that a person gave a lot of money to the committee to reelect the president and that money went to the people who broke into Watergate. One man nicknamed “Deep Throat”, was one of the people that helped the reporters by telling them to “Follow the money”. Once they did that, they found out that those men were trying to steal information from the Democratic Party that was trying to elect another president.
When President Nixon found out he tried to cover it up. Because of that Congress began the impeachment progress. But President Nixon resigned as the 37th president before the conviction was made. He also wanted to stop all of the arguing.
I think the whole Watergate scandal was very significant because it made people not trust the government as much as they used to. Also because of the Watergate scandal President Nixon was the first American President to resign.
