What Did The Ancient Egyptians Eat?
by By looking at the Egyptian hieroglyphics and pictures, we see that they have left a record of what they ate and drank.
Bread Making
Milking Cows
Fishing
Meat
The more wealthy Egyptians ate meat often, including:
- Pork
- Beef
- Deer (Gazelles)
- Lamb
- Goat
Poultry
Poultry was available to rich and poor alike. They ate:
- Geese
- Ducks
- Quails
- Cranes
Fish
Fish was available to all – from the Nile. Fish was roasted or boiled.
As the Egyptians did not have fridges, To preserve the fish or meat it was dipped into salt or hung out in the sun to dry out, then stored in clay pots.
Bread
The Hieroglyph shows that bread was part of the diet for all Egyptians.
Bread was not risen or spongy like today’s bread, it was a flat, hard substance but still of great nutritional value.
Pastry was also cooked.
Vegetables
Vegetables were important to all Egyptians diets. They grew and harvested the following:
- Beans
- Chick peas
- Lentils
- Green peas
- Leeks
- Lettuce
- Garlic
- Onions
Fruit
The following fruits were grown and harvested:
- Dates
- Plums
- Figs
- Grapes
- Raisins
- Pomegranates
- Watermelons
Dairy
As we can see from the picture that the Egyptians milked cattle and used some of the milk to make cheese and butter.
They cooked with sesame oil and caster oil.
Spices
Much of the food that the Egyptians ate were seasoned with the following spices:
- Salt
- Pepper
- Cumin
- Coriander
- Sesame
- Dill
- Fennel
- Honey was also eaten by the wealthy
Drinks
The main drink of the Egyptians was beer – made from barley. Sometimes spices were added to the beer for flavour.
Spiced beer was often offered to the Gods in religious ceremonies.
The wealthy often drank wine made from grapes and pomegranates or plums
Egyptians lived in mud brick homes (which they built themselves) and they cooked in the kitchen which was at the rear of the house or on the roof – in the open.
They cooked in clay pots using wooden utensils.
Many of the Egyptians were farmers and they traded their goods in the market place.
There were many religious festivals, organised by the Temple priests, which involved feasting, music and dancing.
