Whatever Happened to Fizzies and Other Great Stuff?

by Bren Parks in History, December 9, 2008

As a child, you assume that whatever is in your life is going to stay that way forever. Much to my dismay, I discovered through the years that nothing could be further from the truth. Here are a few of my favorite snacks as a child. Whatever happened to them, anyway?

As a child, you assume that whatever is in your life is going to stay that way forever.  Much to my dismay, I discovered through the years, that nothing could be further from the truth.  Here are a few of my favorite snacks as a child.  Whatever happened to them anyway?  Too bad they are no longer around.

TV Time Popcorn

TV Time Popcorn was sold in a two pocket pouch.  One pouch contained the popcorn along with salt and the other one was for the yellow, coagulated grease.  Sure, you were really basically buying a heart attack in a box, but watching Davy Crockett just wouldn’t have been the same any other way.

Nabisco Sugar Wafers

These were really good back when they were made of sugar.  Now they have replaced the center filling with one made of corn syrup.  It’s just not the same.

Fizzies

They looked like Alka Seltzer but when you dropped them in a glass of water, they fizzed and exploded with yummy fruit flavors.  If you were a real die hard, you would simply pop one in your mouth and feel the fizz then gross out your mother with a red, blue or green tongue.

Bonomo’s Turkish Taffy

You could hold it in your hand until it got nice and soft then pull it into strands. Or you could slam it on the counter and break it into bite sized pieces.  It came in three really tasty flavors – vanilla, banana and strawberry, but the vanilla was the best.

Popsicles

Popsicles used to taste better than they do now.  I remember I would run an ice cream truck down for six blocks just to see it the ice cream man had banana Popsicles.  Now, the flavors are positively bland compared to the great taste they had when they still added real fruit flavor to them.

Hydrox Chocolate Cookies

Admit it:  They were better than Oreos, but when they changed the formula for the white icing, they lost their appeal.

Forever Yours Candy Bar

The Mars Candy Company made Forever Yours, which was  basically a vanilla Milky Way Bar.  If you ever got tired of the chocolate version, then Forever Yours was heaven in a little package.

Three Musketeers Bar

Remember when Mars Candy advertised that you could share a Three Musketeers Bar with two friends because it was so big?  Now you can’t even share it at all, it is so small.

Lik-M-Ade

Whoever invented them knew how to give a kid a good time.  Lik-M-Ade was fruit flavored sugar that was sold in packages of five paper envelopes containing cherry, orange, grape, lemon-lime and grape.  You tore them open and shook a little in your mouth.  You could also mix them in a glass of water, but that was for wimps.

Wow, thanks for the memories. Hydrox cookies WERE better than Oreos, by far. So many of the candies and treats I remember from when I was a kid seem better than the ones my kids eat today. . . but I guess that’s the way memory works. The memories from childhood are always better.
