Who Was Jack the Ripper: Answered
My theories for the four main suspects to the case of Jack the Ripper.
The answer to the question, who I think was Jack the Ripper will be answered in this short essay. First it says who was Jack the Ripper. It could have been an alien so it should be what is Jack the Ripper, but let’s not dwell in hypothesis and get real. All the crimes took place in Whitechapel; they were all in 1 mile radius of each other. The victims were Mary Ann (Polly) Nichols, murdered Friday, August 31, 1888 at the gate way to Brown and Eagle Warehouse. Annie Chapman murdered Saturday, September 8, 1888 found dead at a doorway in the back yard of 29 Hanbury Street, Spitalfields. Elizabeth Stride was found at 1 in the morning on Sunday September 30th, 1888. She was lying on the Dutch Field yard of Berner Street. Catherine “Kate” Eddowes was found at 1.45 in the morning at also Sunday September 30th, 1888. She was found lying on the south eastern corner of Mitre Square. Mary Jane Kelly was killed on Friday 9th of November. She was found lying on the bed in the single room where she lived at 13 Miller’s Court, back parlor of Dorset Street, Spitalfields. The only things that the women had in common was that they was all said to be prostitutes but he fact still remain uncertain. All the attack might have been all done during night time and all the bodies where mutilated apart form Elizabeth (Lizzy), where it was thought that Jack was disturbed. In some of the murder inner organs have been taken form their bodies. They had all lived in the, what I think is a slum, East End of London where the living conditions are horrible. It could have been a group organization of the murders; that however is unlikely. I think this because that the murders of Lizzy and Kate was both in the time of 1 hour. To reinforce the facts Lizzy’s body was the only one that as not mutilated, and then ran away of find someone else to get rid of his anger. We always talk about Jack the Ripper being a male but however there is no evidence that it was a girl. I think this because that all the victims are women so that a man could have been sexually high and killed them. In this essay it would just be easier to call him a male.
I think that Jack the Ripper was a one man with a bad child life. A man with strong mental discipline, not only kill someone and then mutilate their body. The person that I think for the start is George Chapman.
I think Jack the Ripper could have been George Chapman because he began studies as a surgeon after which he completed his studies in the Hospital of Praga in Warsaw, this links up with the evidence that jack the ripper had some medical knowledge so he would have know where all the organ he need to take where in the body. On the other hand he could have just been mutilating the body just for fun and taken what ever he came across. When he came to England he made a new I identity for him self as George Chapman, he was baron with the name Severin Antoniovich Klosowski. He might have wanted to change his name because he had planed it out beforehand so he could gat away with a different identity after the murders. According to Begg ET alia he had arrived in England just before Jack the Ripper murders month of June 1887. Given this time he could have mapped out all the places in the East End so he could families the surrounds so if he is discovered he will know the quickest escape routes. Next he worked as a barber form either late 1887 or early 1888. During this time he could have got a knife for the store and used it as a weapon, learning to cut hair could improve his skill with knifes. This did not go well, because after 5 month he was running a barber shop of his own at 126 Cable Street, St. George’s-in-the-East, this was according to the Post Office London Directory. The place he moved to was very close to Whitechaple and it is likely according to sources that this was his residence in 1888, the year of the murders. This is likely to prove that the place he was living at could have been a prefect place for the suspect to hide and live in. Also we know this; during the 1890 George had a similar job as a barber in Whitechapel High Street and George Yard. This is where all the murders took place, this goes to show that he might had a strong connection with Whitechaple, because he moved places twice and still he is near Whitechaple. Or he was not a rich man and decided to move to a place where he can afford. It is also possible that he had also killed someone else apart for the 5 whom where killed. Martha Tabram was killed in august 1888. He was found only a few yards away form George’s shop. This was the month that Mary was murder so he could have tested how to kill someone before the 5 main murders. However there is no evidence to show that he has committed the killing of Martha so it could just be a coincidence or the real Jack the Ripper trying to frame him.
Later after Jack the Ripper murders he was found guilty of murdering his 3 women. (0) He was later killed (hanged) as a murder in 1903. He might have wanted to change his style in case he was caught so he turned to poising, but his is uncommon for a serial killer to change his style. When he was accused of being Jack the Ripper he had denied it even thought he was going to die anyway so he might have not being Jack. However they did have a lot of thing in common he had an outrageous sex drive and has beaten four of his wives and killed three. Only a man which has a good metal discipline of just a loony could do such a thing, well that is want I think anyway. Or he was never Jack the Ripper and it was all a coincidence he was at the wrong place at the wrong time or Jack decided to pick a man to Frame so he won’t be caught himself. This is my evidence for him being a strong suspect and for him being innocent. But if he was jack the ripper the most reliable evidence which more likely than the other are for him poising his wives because this show he is capable of killing not just any one but people that are close to him. It is more reliable because he was found guilty and for the others as I said before he could have just been in the worn place at the wrong time.
I think that Aaron Kosminski was a suspect because form this picture on the right he matched the description of what other people had said. For example Emily Walter, Israel Schwartz and George Hutchinson described him as having a dark complexion and a moustache. This source could be unreliable because it is in black and white so the true colour of his skin or hair can be obtained.
He could have also been Jack because of ‘the writing on the wall’ (2). Aaron was a Jew so he might have been Jack; on the other hand if he was not Jack and Jack knows him personally then he might have decided to make him look like the murder. (You keep your friends close, but you keep your enemies closer).
Aaron’s background was that he was form Poland, but might have moved to Russia, and Aaron immigrated to England during 1880-1881, which was 7-8 years for him to get used to the city. He came here because during that time there were killing of Jews in Russia, some places Jews where even banned. During childhood he lived in a crowed and poor environment, in this environment Aaron could have witness attacks and sexual abuse of the people around him. As he is a child he may not understand but as he grow older he may begin to understand and start hating the people such as prostitutes, this is the most likely possibility other than e.g. becoming one of the abusers himself because by that time he would have know what was good and what was bad. (3)
In February 1891 he was transferred to a mental hospital and marked as insane. He was a suspect in Chief Constable Melville MacNaghten’s report, which showed that there were strong reasons for suspecting him begin Jack the Ripper, that he “had a great hatred of women, with strong homicidal tendencies” was what the people looking after him in the asylum had said, and people said that he was always near Mitre Square. This was the place that Endows was murdered. This makes him seem an even stronger suspect. In the asylum there was only ever one mention of aggressive behavior. “Incoherent; at times excited and violent – a few days ago he took up a chair, and attempted to strike the charge attendant.” Colney Hatch said the medical superintendent. Overall he was described as harmless. This could have show he was not Jack the Ripper because he was only move 3 years after the murder and if Jack had finished the murders he would have move to a different country. Aaron had spent 25 years in the Asylum and during that time if he was jack the Ripper he might have already cracked and made death comes sooner rather than just wasting away.
As he had a ‘great hatred for women’ and all the murders where women it show he was likely to have killed the people that he hated after all it gave him reasons to do the killing. All the murders happen in 1 mile of each other, Aaron had lived in the 1 mile range so I could have been him after all he was in the most likeliest place. However he could not have been Jack because his English would be not so good so he would stick out in the crowd and then he will be easy to track. He was also a Jew so again he will be notice by distinct features. Altogether the evidence makes him a strong suspect.
There is evidence to suggest that Montague John Druitt was Jack the Ripper because he had a very respectable profile. Then he will make the perfect man to get the murder done and go unnoticed. Also people such as P.C. William Smith and George Hutchinson described him as ‘respectable type of man’. During the year of 1888 he was a barrister and teacher, and as I said they are respectable jobs. Now if you were to see a ‘respectable’ man how can you tell? Well maybe by the way the walk and the cloth they wear, but an ordinary, middle class person can fake the way they walk and buy new posh cloth. This leads to show, that the eye witness accounts are unreliable.
On December 31st 1888 he was found floating in the Thames at Chiswick. According to Henry Winslade the person who had found John, Henry had noted down that he had stones in his pocket. This ensured that he stayed in the water for several weeks and the most likely date that he would have jumped in the river is between the middle of November to early December. If he had committed suicide then he might have been guilty of something, however it could have of depression as his father died 3 year before the murders and his mother had died in July 1888. The last of Jack’s murder, Mary Kelly, happened 9th of November. This makes us think that is was him because after November there were no more murders. If John was Jack what had lead him to this change? It is said that when he was teaching he had abused his students and later called ‘sexual insane’, and if this was real then he and Jack will share a similarity of being ‘sexually high’. It is thought that he had been to medical school. This has yet to be confirmed. No doubt if he had gone to medical school, if he had then the evidence against him will be very high. If not, he could have learnt medical knowledge of his father.
After he had died the principal of the school went through his papers and found this quote’ Since Friday I felt I was going to be like mother and the best thing was for me to die.’ And in the process of him think that he was going to commit suicide he could have kill many girls in the process. The message that was left above the Eddowes murder was written in chalk, so we are look of somebody that can obtain a piece of chalk easily, and who more that a teacher. He handwriting was noted that it was written in good secondary handwriting, so the capabilities of a teacher or a keen student.
It concludes that he is a likely person to be Jack. The most important point that he is Jack is around the date that he had died the murders stopped. On the other hand if you believe that Alice McKenzie (July 1889) and Frances Coles (February 1891) were victims then he was definitely not Jack.
Francis Tumblety was a suspect in the ripper murders. He was 55 years of age in 1888. It was likely that he had arrived from America and been a doctor and all doctors at that time could have been a suspect. He had been know as a pornographic literature and had worked in a drug store when he was young, during the time he grew up he could have become addicted to the drugs and when he was high on them he decided to kill the women or have sex with them.
Francis was known to have been in jail failing to give the pregnancy of a local prostitute, this could show that he was interested in prostitute when he was young. This could link up with him kill prostitute when he was older.
He had used a lot of different names and as a doctor there was no need in them, doctors were well respected. But for some reason and choosing a bad alias he got himself arrested again, could be at the wrong place at the wrong time, and got in the mist of the Lincoln assassination. This show he has a habit of getting into trouble, maybe it was a coincidence but most likely ha had a small part to play.
He left USA and began traveling across Europe. He was in England during 1888. He was he during the murders while he could be any where else in the whole Europe so could it be another coincidence? In London he was in trouble with the law for a number of occasions and most of the time it was for homosexual activity. This was something that Jack had too. He was known to have hated women and this could have leaded him to killing the types of women that he really hated. However he may just have hated them for personal reasons. He was even said to have collected women’s wombs, which make him seem more like Jack. However it could have been for medical reasons as he is a doctor.
The solid fact that he was not Jack the Ripper is that during the 5th murder of Kelly he should have been in prison for ‘gross indecency and indecent assault’ this make him seem even more like Jack, and therefore could not have been the murder. It is rumored that he was given bail during November 9th in 1888. This I believe could have happened because he was wealthy enough to bribe the police. He was officially given bail on 16th 1888 but he fled the country to France on November 24th 1888. The strange thing is after he had left the murders had stopped, so it is kind of likely that it could have been Francis because if he was jail for what he was caught, the verdict might not be that bad, if he was Jack he might have believed that they might get evidence so he fled. This to me is the most important fact for him being Jack the Ripper.
I think that Jack the Ripper is still George Chapman, because he could have been at the murder places unlike Francis. He was a man that is unlikely to stand out rather that Aaron. He had the mental ability to kill people whereas the other 3 are not because they have not killed. The most convincing evidence that point to George Chapman being Jack is that he had changed his name come to the U.K without a good reason. So allover all he was what I think the most likeliest to be Jack the Ripper.
FOOTNOTES
(0)His first wife (Emile Klosowski) was still in Poland when he was married to Lucy Baderski, and as you can guess Emile came back and then it turn into a female battle. In the end Emile gave and moved away, George and Lucy moved from place to place but finally the emigrated to America New Jersey after 1891. He might have wanted to move so he can escape the accusations of him being Jack the Ripper, or he might have just wanted to stop Emily finding him, live in a better unknown environment or go looking for a better job. It is also said without good evidence that their baby boy had died so they did not want to live in the same place anymore. In Jersey he attacks Lucy with a knife (1). Lucy decided to move back to London and George soon followed. He later married Annie Chapman (not the Ripper victim). Then Mary Spink, it was said that on the 3rd of April, 1897 he bought a bay of poison. Mary was he first one to die with the. He soon entered another marriage with Bessie Taylor. Soon Bessie was developing the same disease and Mary and later she died. The final marriage was to Maud Marsh the coincidence was that she began to develop the same disease. In the body of Maud arsenic was presented and so George Chapman’s poisoning streak was over.
(1) (Klosowski’s real wife, Lucy Klosowski, who was present in the Central Criminal Court last week, has made a startling statement as to what occurred in the New Jersey shop. She states that on one occasion, when she had had a quarrel with her husband, he held her down on the bed, and pressed his face against her mouth to keep her from screaming. At that moment a customer entered the shop immediately in front of the room, and Klosowski got up to attend him. The woman chanced to see a handle protruding from underneath the pillow. She found, to her horror, that it was a sharp and formidable knife, which she promptly hid. Later, Klosowski deliberately told her that he meant to have cut her head off, and pointed to a place in the room where he meant to have buried her. She said, ‘But the neighbours would have asked where I had gone to.’ ‘Oh,’ retorted Klosowski, calmly, ‘I should simply have told them that you had gone back to New York.’)
This source may not be reliable because Lucy could have only been assaulted a bit, the turns her hate toward him and begins to exaggerate what has happen so Klosowski might get a worst punishment. The source might be reliable because the customer could tell the judge that if she is lying or not, and special could have been at the court and would have been able to tell if she is lying or not. Form my point of view this source is biased and should not be talking in to account and also incomplete.
(2)’ The Juwes are the men who will not be blamed for nothing.’ The word Juwes probably mean Jews and if you think about it, it means the Jew are the people that are blamed for something. This source could be reliable because it was above Eddowes murder, it was written in chalk. So it is most likely that Jack had left it there to give them a hint of who he was. However it may be unreliable because he might have just left it there just to make the police get off his trail. Also he could have a strong dislike for Jews and decided to frame them.
(3) ‘Consider the following scenario: a young Aaron witnesses violence and a generally hateful environment in the Pale; as a result of poverty he is forced to share a bed with some female members of his family, most likely his sisters. He possibly witnesses his sisters menstrual bleeding, for example when his sister Betsy would have been 12 years old in 1869, and Aaron was only 4 or 5. As a result of this he becomes obsessed with the internal organs, and associates blood or violence with sexuality. Later, he begins to have sexual fantasies involving his sisters. When he is about 16 he witnesses violence, murders, and rape during the pogroms in 1881, possible including the rape of members of his family. From then on, he has a confused sexual fantasy realm involving sexual violence and his older sisters. Later, when he is masturbating compulsively, in front of his sisters, they reject him and ridicule him. Out of this miasma of sexual frustration and a sense of rejection, Aaron enacts his violent fantasies involving his sisters towards women in general.’
This is a quote for casebook on an account that was likely to have happened.
