The Emigration from Italy to America
There are many reasons for why the Italians emigrated from their country to America.
The most crucial and the main reason for the emigration were because of Italy’s standard of living. It is known that the standard of living became worse in the whole of Italy before the 1940s, especially in and around the countryside. This was because Diseases and starvation were at the increase all the time.
Food had become the biggest cost for an Italian family. Many poorer families spent about 75 % of their money on food. Despite the cost of food, the food they could afford failed to even contain enough nutrition to keep a person alive.
In the southern parts of Italy many people began to suffer malaria. At first, malaria only struck in the coastal areas, but this changed as deforestation, erosion and flooding caused the malaria to spread. This resulted to a mass increase of deaths of over 2 million a year.
Later on the Italians had no choice to emigrate due to the economic crisis. Their target was to immigrate to America because they had much more money and it was easy to travel to due to the railroads.
