World War One

A brief description.

Each and every country formed, or tried to form treaties and coalitions. It is quite evident, therefore, that should even a reitively small war were to break out, it would involve most, if not all of Europe.

World War I (or the Great War, as it was called) was the first more modern war. New, grand, and sometimes terrible armaments were being created. Aircraft, submersibles, and tanks were some more noticeable war machines. As far as the normal Infantrymen go, tear gas, grenades, mustard gas, and flamethroughers were used, as well as machine guns.

So far all I’ve talked about were weapons. Now I’ll move on . Lets compare two treaties, the Treaty of Versailles and The Fourteen Points. Both treaties demanded that Germany should return Alsace and Lorraine to France. The Fourteen Points stated that there had to be “armament reduction”, whereas the Treaty of Versailles specified that the German army was limited to 100,000 men.

The peace settlements at the end of the war however, were so unified that it actually would be rather easy for another world war to begin over a relatively small disagreement. The League of Nations was created to achieve world peace. However, the League failed. Some reasons may have been that the United States didn’t join, the League couldn’t make anybody do anything, and important decisions could only be made by a unanimous vote.

Some people believe that global disarmament is the key to peace. However, if just one country were to keep its weapons, they would be the world power. And if all nations did disarm, there would be hand to hand wars for no one can resist the temptation of destroying on another; not to mention the fact that there will be wars till Christ returns.
