Youngest Mother in History Was Only Five-Years-Old
I came across this story and was absolutely mortified. I looked at my five-year-old daughter….then looked down at my pregnant stomach and couldn’t fathom how a five-year-old could possibly carry a child or survive childbirth.

Lina Medina is the youngest mother in history, or at least the youngest confirmed mother. She was born in Peru in 1933. When she was just five-years- old, Her parents brought her to the emergency room after noticing her stomach was growing abnormally in girth. At first, doctors thought she might have a tumor, but upon testing she was found to be seven months pregnant. The next month and a half was documented and photographed by several doctors, which has ruled this out as an urban myth. She gave birth to a healthy six pound baby boy via c-section on May 14, 1939, ironically, Mother‘s Day.
There is some conflicting information about just when Lina started her menstruation. It is clear she had precocious puberty, but one medical journal by Dr. Edmundo Escomel documented Lina’s first menstruation was around 8 months old, while another journal documented it at age 2 ½. An ovary biopsy, taken during the c-section, showed that Lina’s ovaries were the same as a mature females.
Her father was arrested for rape and incest charges, but was ultimately released for lack of evidence. Lina never claimed that her father molested her and she never disclosed who the father might be.
I really just could not believe this story, but all of the sources from the internet check out.

That was totally amazing and mind-boggling. From the medical standpoint, I have not heard about that so early menstruation. Even younger than my 8-year-old daughter? Oh my!

This is a fascinating medical mystery- I had never heard about this before, although I had read about girls as young as seven beginning menstruation.
I feel bad for her- she had no girlhood.

I couldn’t believe my eyes, what a horrible thing to happen and so unbelievable. I am at a loss of words to say but I sure wish the man respobsible for this heinous act could have been “dealt” with.

This is some crazy stuff. I have never heard anything like this before. I mean the youngest I have ever heard a girl can get her period is around age 8 or 9 yrs old. And her dad raping her. that is even more messed up!

The prophet of the Koran was mated to a nine year old. In the American society there is a challenge to the world to overcome centuries old abuse of women. Only this year there was an attempt in a Muslim country to marry a child to a much older adult. Religion and beliefs will not hinder the footsteps of Justice in the coming world.

how did she get pregnant? i know it says her father, but there was lack of proof… and i thought you had to go through puberty to have kids…

Authorities suspected her father. Lina never named her father as the father of her baby; she never named anyone. The doctors that cared for her suspect that she was too young to even know what had happened to her….much less name who done it. Since genetic DNA testing for paternity was not around back then, there wasn’t any witnesses to the girl being molested, and Lina couldn’t/wouldn’t name a father…..the police did not have any evidence to charge whoever fathered her child.
As for the puberty issue- that is answered in this paragraph of the article:

She had precocious puberty see- https://health.google.com/health/ref/Precocious+puberty for a detailed definition. However, Lina went through puberty at a record age. Most cases occur no younger than 8. Lina was between 8 mo and 2 1/2.

I remember reading about this in a paper and I vividly remember being shocked. Guess this is just one of those things that you just find out and think is absurd the way it’s true! A brilliant article and very well researched. Good stuff!

This is a really tragic story. I could not comprehend, either one of my daughters having a baby at the age of 5. Poor child she was just a baby herself. You know she did not understand what was going on. She had to have been raped. They should have done more investigating. I see that picture and I just want to cry. A baby having a baby. How unfair to mess up her whole childhood, and her innocence taken away so young. This was a good story. I still cannot believe a 5 year old having a baby.

Her son weighed 6lb at birth and was named Gerardo after one of the doctors. Gerardo was raised believing that Lina was his sister, but found out at the age of ten that she was his mother. He grew up healthy but died in 1979 at the age of 40 of a disease of the bone narrow.
Medina later married Raúl Jurado, who fathered her second son in 1972. They live in a poor district of Lima known as Chicago Chico (”Little Chicago”). She refused an interview with Reuters in 2002.
