10 Reasons to Love Halloween

Halloween is the best holiday ever. It’s full of fun, food, and severed limbs.

Let me be perfectly honest, Halloween is my favorite Holiday.  I like it better than Christmas and Thanksgiving combined.  Halloween has had a special place in my heart since the very first time I put on a witch costume.  There I was, four years old, dressed in a long black dress, smothered in green make-up and carrying an old, broken broomstick.  I was surrounded by ghouls, goblins, and the  occasional super hero.  I was in my element.

Every year at this time I start visiting Halloween stores, planning out my costume and buying decorations.  This year I’m going with a “Blood Spattered” theme.  Mostly this consists of blood spatter window clings, table cloths, and wall clings.  I will also place fake limbs and eyeballs in strategic places for added effect.  My house will be plastered with skulls, cobwebs, and creepy crawlies.  I can’t wait!

This is also the time of year I get asked over and over again, “Why do you like Halloween so much?  Aren’t you 30?”  Allow me to answer.  Yes, I’m 30, and Halloween is still my most favorite Holiday.  As someone given more toward sarcasm than cheer, the mood of holiday is fitting to me.  Halloween’s also special becuase it’s the one time of year you get to dress in a costume, pretend to be someone else, pretend to have all sorts of wounds and gashes, and no one calls the cops.

In order to explain this to people that have, perhaps, lost that Scary Spirit, I have made a list of reason to embrace the fun of Halloween:

  1. Free Candy

Let’s be serious.  Who doesn’t love candy?  Even if you’re not a fan, you can still get gobs of it for free and give it to people you know who love it.  If my few years in corporate America have taught me anything, it’s this: people love free food.

  2. Horror Movie Parties

Every year, you get a one week period where it’s perfectly acceptable for a group of mature grownups to sit around a television watching villains stalk and kill large numbers of people.  Typically, campy movies are required to truly have a good time.  I recommend later sequels of Hellraiser, Friday The 13th, and Nightmare on Elm Street.

I don’t enjoy Halloween as much now. I’m to old to go trick or treating. However, who says they’ll ever know if I wear a mask. Ha! Great read.

I used to enjoy Halloween in college and younger, but now I just see it as another holiday that I have to spend money on….=8-0

Great article. Exclusive villages and malls here in Manila really go for costume parties, trick and treat games, etc. But in the provinces, such frivolities are not as celebrated as Christmas.

All this talk of Halloween makes me feel all cosy inside. This brings back some cool memories of my childhood. Growing up, Halloween was the time where I could stay up late (if it landed on a weekend) and watch horror movies while in my pajamas sipping my hot chocolate. Your article is a memory jogger. Cool stuff!

I agree. Halloween is the best. I once turned my house into a haunted house. It was a lot of work, but it was so much fun. I just don’t like store bought costumes. They’re so cheesy. I make my own.

    Great article.

Have you ever thought of writing a full length book on Halloween, but not just how it is celebrated in the modern day, but all about the origins. I’ve done some research on the subject. It would make a very interesting book.

    Great article!
Halloween has been and always will be my favorite as well. Why? For a million reasons but one comes to mind—I have never had a bad one!
I can not say that about any other holiday!
Once the Trick or Treating part ended….I went onto creating my own haunts for the neighborhood kids with other teens. This evolved over the years and now, at 46, Halloween is bigger and scarier than I ever.
While my husband and I put together a big Halloween party for a non-profit organization each year, I still find time to have my own fun (without the work) by visiting every semi-professional haunt in my area.
    Long Live Halloween!
