10 Reasons to Love Halloween

Halloween is the best holiday ever. It’s full of fun, food, and severed limbs.

  • Clever Costumes

This is a true pleasure.  I love to see what kind of creative costumes come out every year.  One of my favorites was a cosutme a friend of mine did a few years ago.  He dressed up like Fidel Castro and tied a blue sheet around his waist so it fell like a skirt.  He then glued little plastic pigs to the sheet.  His costume?  The Bay of Pigs Invasion.

Other favorites have been a friend that dressed in pink and tied a shoe to the top of her head – she was bubblegum.  I also had a friend that made miniature legs and attached them to the front abdomen.  She then cut up a cardboard box, draped a blue sheet around it, shoved her hair up under a hat and drew on a gray beard.  She was “The Old Man In The Sea”.

  • Cute Costumes

Who doesn’t love a 3 year old bumblebee?  Halloween also has it’s own little cute side.  There’s nothing like a fresh batch of toddlers trick-or-treating to make you feel warm and fuzzy.

  • Get to dress up like strange celebrities

How many Halloween parties have you been to where  someone has used Halloween to mock a celebrity?  Whether it’s Phil Spector with a knife, Anglina Jolie with fake tattoos of former husbands, or Britney Spears with a battered baby doll, mocking the famous is always a good time!  (NOTE: It’s mostly good because we’re jealous that they don’t have day jobs.)

  • Halloween Stores

Some people love clothes shopping.  I like spending hours looking at costumes, fake blood, pimp jewelry and severed heads.  But, hey, I’m a special girl…

  • Acceptance of Gore

If you’ve EVER been a horror movie fan, Halloween is for you.  Halloween is to blood and guts what Christmas is to mistletoe.  This is the only time of year you can openly applaud a friend that takes the time to create fake intestines for an outfit.  Oh, how I wish that were year round.  “Hey guys, did you see my new exposed liver I paired with my Prada?”

  • Office Halloween Celebrations

Everyone likes a break in the day.  What makes for a better break than free food (see #1) and the simple sounds of Thriller being pumped through your office’s PA system?

  • Trick-Or-Treating

I was so sad when I went to college, I finally had to give up trick-or-treating.  It wasn’t so much the free candy I missed, but running around neighborhoods in scary costumes.  Oh the joy of knocking on strangers’ doors just to get a free treat.  Once again, see #1 for reference.

  • Coolest Decorations for a Holiday

I know there are a lot of Christmas fans out there.  I see a lot of time and care go into decorations every December.  But nothing, and I mean nothing, beats a house decked out for Halloween.  If you are so lucky as to have a Halloween enthusiast in your neighborhood, compare their house at Halloween to any house at Christmas.  It’s just cooler.

I’m a big fan of Halloween as well. It’s getting close to the time for me to pull out the decorations. Thanks for the reminder.

I don’t enjoy Halloween as much now. I’m to old to go trick or treating. However, who says they’ll ever know if I wear a mask. Ha! Great read.

I used to enjoy Halloween in college and younger, but now I just see it as another holiday that I have to spend money on….=8-0

Great article. Exclusive villages and malls here in Manila really go for costume parties, trick and treat games, etc. But in the provinces, such frivolities are not as celebrated as Christmas.

All this talk of Halloween makes me feel all cosy inside. This brings back some cool memories of my childhood. Growing up, Halloween was the time where I could stay up late (if it landed on a weekend) and watch horror movies while in my pajamas sipping my hot chocolate. Your article is a memory jogger. Cool stuff!

I agree. Halloween is the best. I once turned my house into a haunted house. It was a lot of work, but it was so much fun. I just don’t like store bought costumes. They’re so cheesy. I make my own.

      Great article.

Have you ever thought of writing a full length book on Halloween, but not just how it is celebrated in the modern day, but all about the origins. I’ve done some research on the subject. It would make a very interesting book.

      Great article!
Halloween has been and always will be my favorite as well. Why? For a million reasons but one comes to mind—I have never had a bad one!
I can not say that about any other holiday!
Once the Trick or Treating part ended….I went onto creating my own haunts for the neighborhood kids with other teens. This evolved over the years and now, at 46, Halloween is bigger and scarier than I ever.
While my husband and I put together a big Halloween party for a non-profit organization each year, I still find time to have my own fun (without the work) by visiting every semi-professional haunt in my area.
      Long Live Halloween!
