A Christmas Carol: Ebenezer & Belle
The comparison of Scrooge and his lost love Belle from the most well-known Christmas stories of all time.
Ebenezer and Belle loved each other but when she couldn’t compare to his love for money he was forced to give one up, her. Ebenezer and Belle used to be in love; in fact they were engaged to get married. When she couldn’t afford to bring a dowry into their marriage it was blatantly obvious that he disapproved of the idea. Even though it broke her heart she had no choice but to say goodbye, a memory that forever haunts Ebenezer. They haven’t spoken since, she moved on to get married and have children, and sadly Scrooge was never able to move on.
Ebenezer Scrooge is a regretful hardened man who won’t let anyone in, not family, not employees and refused to make friends. He chose to be isolated from people so he would never get hurt, he knew well that when you care for people you hurt for them to. However he wasn’t always that way there was a time he loved people, Christmas, love, and imagination. Although he was often lonely as a child he found company in books. He was excited for Christmas kind to people and although his childhood wasn’t necessarily fortunate he was most often joyous. Gradually, disappointment got to him and he began to shut things out and thought if he changed his focus to money he’d be happy. Yet through it all, with the help of four ghosts, he was awakened to what he’d become and what he’d lost. From that point forward he truly valued life, his and all others.
Belle is a loving caring girl, but a girl could only take so much heartbreak. She and Scrooge grew up together, neither of them had much money. She was faithful through all the ups and downs until she realized their love was no longer equal. She moved on and lived a happy, joyful life with a new guy and together they had more children than scrooge could count.
Belle and Ebenezer have multiple similarities. They both grew up in poverty and, at first at least, were content with that. They shared this dreamer quality that believed they could do whatever they wanted. They wanted a family together, a life together, and a future together. These two characters were both destined to be together with these similar dreams. Unfortunately, Ebenezer had a flaw that would over ride these undeniable similarities.
