A Tradition for Hard Times
An innovative idea for families, office groups etc. that takes the pressure off of spending a lot of money in gift purchases for Christmas. Particularly relevant during difficult financial times.
During hard times Christmas gift buying can become stressful and purchasing a meaningful gift for the right person can be impossible when money is in short supply.
A Christmas tradition that might be worthwhile starting during these times would be to draw names.
Have everyone in the family or group write their name on a piece of paper, fold it and place it in a container. The container is shook up and passed around. Each person then chooses a piece of paper. If they receive their own name they put it back in the container and pick another one. Thus the gift giving is simplified. A limit as to what the maximum amount of money is allowed to be spent on the gift is decided upon by the group.
The names each person has chosen remains a secret until Christmas when the gifts are exchanged. This can be a fun way to enjoy the gift of giving at Christmas without the pressure of having to spend a lot of money.
Buying for just one person provides the opportunity to spend time pondering what would be the most meaningful gift for that individual instead of having to purchase a multitude of gifts for several people, rushing around purchasing gifts that are quick and easy rather than something that is truly significant . It keeps the true meaning of Christmas alive.
