A Wife’s Letter to Her Warrior

A letter I hope never is written but suspect already has been. The awful spoils of war.

Dear Johnny,

Oh, how I’ve missed you all these months and I hope you are staying safe.  Your latest letter came today, more quickly than usual.  I hate it when you describe the awful conditions over there and I wish that it would end today.  The president is sending more troops your way so maybe you’ll get some help and be able to come home earlier.

Everyone here sends their love and best wishes.  You’re mentioned in our servicemen’s prayer gathering each Sunday morning at church and I light a candle every Sunday night and pray you’ll come back home safe and sound.  We set a place for you at the Thanksgiving Day table and I sat next to your empty chair.  We’ll do the same at Christmas.

Johnny, you must know how much I love you with all my heart and soul but I had no idea you would be over there for more than a year.  We were so young.  Maybe we should have waited to get married until after you got back from combat.  I got so lonely, Johnny.  I missed you so much.  Our daughter will be born next month.  I didn’t have the courage to tell you until now.  She will carry your name on her birth certificate.  That’s the law in this state.  Oh, Johnny, I’m so sorry, so very, very sorry.  If I don’t hear from you again, her name will be  Elizabeth Ann.

                                               Your loving wife, Melissa

Pretty sad and a bit uncaring for a loving person to write such a note at the bottom.

Not quite sure to make of the comments that people leave on posts here. Does anyone really take the time to read what people actually write?

This is some powerful prose and it could be interpreted a few different ways; I like the play on Dear John/Johnny, as in Johnny Comes Marching Home.

When someone in combat receives a letter like that It has to be hard for them to focus, pretty sure they become distracted, I think things like that should wait until they return home, other lives are also at stake. Awesom and very moving.

So very very sad. My husband told me of a friend he was out to sea with that received a letter like this from his wife. At that time we didn’t have computers and e-mail. It was as if my husband just dropped off the face of the earth for six months. The life of a military wife is also not an easy job.

I’m afraid it’s happening to many of our soldier boys. I feel so bad for them but it happens in all wars. Our boys deserve better.

I wonder just how many wives have penned a letter like that one. Very sad.

If somebody’s unfaithful…they are unfaithful. There is nothing to be sentimental about with this “sad” letter. Sounds like the real purpose of the letter is that she now needs her husband’s support and forgiveness because she is lonely. Probablly the baby’s daddy left her since knocking her up. Real selfish of her, that she decided to bomb her man with all news, while he is away in war.

However, I don’t know when she would have informed him in a better circumstance either. WHen he returns home and she is standing there in the crowd holding this kid? That is also hard.

Maybe they can make it work. People make mistakes. Maybe he can forgive her.
