April 1: True Story

This is April 1, a day for wickedness and cunningness for personal gain. What someone can tell you today, you better set it aside until tomorrow when seriousness will kick off!

It was morning on a day like today- April 1 – some years back. The person came to our farm, nicely dressed with a light briefcase and a walking stick. As usual in our village, utmost respect for our visitors is our first priority – it does not mater whether they are strangers of the known villager—it is necessary for homeowners to express appreciation for the visitors or guests.

On this particular day, the visiting person was not an ordinary man, he claimed many posts in government and how he is capable of taking one of us to an awaiting job. Just imagine how happy we were, thinking of difficult it is to have get a job in our country, especially government jobs are so rare and if they happen to be available, then one must have a inside man to facilitate entry. We thought the man was Godsend to deliver us from unemployment, so we played along with his touchy tricks.

Oops! Time was swiftly counting to lunch time hours, and time seemed like flying. Anyway, we managed to serve him food in time and retired to other things, him chatting with our parents as my brothers and I went to play soccer.

It was by evening hour that the man stood up and said he was leaving. To my surprise, he started walking on towards the road. I guessed something was not right, my mind stuck on that illusion and I lost control that I went to him and asked for formal introduction that is when he told us his name as David- a single name. I got satisfied and walked back leaving him standing there with a sneering smile.

Sometimes it is good to have a naughty brother or sister. Do you know what my little brother did? He just came from the house running as if being pursued by an evil animal; every one was puzzled without an inkling of what was happening. In attempt to show how caring he was, David threw his briefcase a side and ran to get our brother. Unfortunate to him- fortunate to us, that the briefcase flew open to disclose real identity of the person who claimed to be a senior public civil servant.  Among the contents of the briefcase were an old wooden comb, a twig-tooth brush, some dirty socks and a small piece of a broken mirror. It was so embarrassing to him but we got satisfied after all.

Well, I guess our treat was like an enticing agent for his tricks, and at the end of the day, he reminded us of the date- April 1- fools day!
