Are Christmas Cards a Dying Trend?
When I was a child, our family would get over two dozen Christmas cards during December. They would be stacked along the blinds of a window for all to look at. The amount of cards that I send and receive seems to have shrunk over the years. Is this an ongoing trend for everyone?

According to most sources, the first idea of a Christmas card came from Sir Henry Cole, the director of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He hired artist John Collcott Horsley in 1843 to design his first card. The card read “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you.” It is amazing that the greeting has hardly changed in over 150 years.

A lot of people have told me that they do not receive as many Christmas cards as they did when they were a child. Some say they use e-cards. A few told me that in this age of e-mailing, they don’t write down physical addresses for everyone. Letter writing has been replaced by electronic communication. I’ve even heard that some people text a Christmas greeting. That seems a little too impersonal for me. Some say one of the reasons of the declining card swapping is the trend of “going green”. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for saving the environment. I just enjoy the thrill of finding a Christmas card in the mailbox.

I hand make all my own cards and send to those who made an effort to keep in touch when we emigrated. Those who did not bother do not benefit from a piece of Glynis art
The cost of postage is a factor I think.

I bought some this year, but only sent to selected ones, the rest just send the greetings via emails/sms…
Some I can send by emails but I know they will be very happy to receive them as I do..

Myspace and Facebook are the trends nowadays I do not mind getting less Christmas cards now. With the economic crisis, people are trying to save every penny.

i agree with you. it is not only a Christmas card but all kind of wishing cards is a dying trend. nowadays most people prefer virtual cards to send wish. i prefer the real cards because its have more sentimental value. nice post.

Gone are the days when Christmas cards are the norm. Well, sending cards seem a more caring way to express greetings which we now treat casually.
