China Launches 3D TV Channels

China has launched a 3D television channel, operated by China Central Television (CCTV) as well as five local stations.

Three-dimensional television channel is still in the testing phase, scheduled to be launched officially on Chinese New Year (Lunar) to come.

Those who have a 3D television sets and set-top-box version of high definition digital TV (HD), can enjoy the new service. Countries such as Japan, South Korea, and India has launched a similar service.

Channel free-to-air will broadcast the 3D program for 4.5 hours, and will repeat the broadcast twice per day.

“The launch of the pilot channel is a concrete step toward the development of 3D television in China,” said Chai Fuchao, Head of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT).

Proclaimed the BBC on Monday (02.01.2012), designer of broadcast regulation also states that these services can generate huge profits for the industry if the approximately 500 million TV sets in China was replaced by a 3D TV.

The program received varied responses from the public. Some users of Sina Weibo (China microblogging service, the equivalent of Twitter) expressed enthusiasm for the 3D TV channel. While several others expressed skepticism, akna wait until the new 3D TV devices, which do not require special glasses.
