Christmas Around The World

Croatian Christmas traditions are very much that most Catholics, on the basis of the country. No meat on Christmas Eve, but instead of a meal, dried, salted cod.

Croatia is known as Santa Claus or Djed Bozicnjak Djed Mraz, or Grandfather Frost. Djed Bozicnjak means Grandfather Christmas. Both characters are familiar to western parts of the world, Santa Claus, but Sveti Nikola, or Saint Nicholas is also an important role in traditional Croatian Christmas.

Sveti Nikola, or Saint Nick, brings gifts to children on his days in December. On December 5, Saint Nicolas Eve, children place their shoes on the windowsills. The next day, the children awaken to find candy and small gifts in their shoes. Krampus, who represents the bad side of the children and leave the switches in place of goodies to remind them to be good next year, may also accompany Sveti Nikola. Saint Nick is not only donors for Christmas, but played an important role in the lives of seafarers as well. His image can be used to protect fishermen and sailors, when they are off.
