Columbus Day
Facts about the discovery…
Christopher Columbus is credited for a land that was never lost. Therefore, he was given a holiday to show appreciation for his discovery. The definition for the word discover is to find or make known first time. That definition says to me that something had to have been lost in order to be found. I really do not feel in my heart of heart that the natives of this country feels that they were lost. The first question that comes to my mind is how did he get direction to a place that was lost? If Columbus did not have direction as to were he was going I would imagine that they would have sailed for days without the discovery. History taught us that his orders came from Spain and England. My take on the natives is that the language that was spoken was a form of Spanish. We foreigners born in the United States of America speak English but our accent as well as some spelling and pronunciation is different from a person born in United Kingdom. You see, history has also shown us the culture prior to Columbus quote, unquote discovery. The culture is precisely like that of Mexico and other Spanish speaking places. When I go to a map I can see that this country is connect to South America by way of Isthmus of Panama in Central America(which is now called Middle America).
The name change represent United Kingdom and the Americas. In the Atlantic Ocean area there is a small island called America Samoa. That lead me to come to the conclusion that Samoa was the original name. If Columbus was available to speak to me I would ask him how does it feel to take credit for interfering with someone homeland? I’m pretty sure that the natives feel that they were shammed out of there land. The world was created long before 1492. Therefore, every land was available to visit. Imagine me going outside and see a person car with the keys in it and driving away with the car. The police stops and I say well, I discovered this car with the key on the street so I took it. Then I ask him will I have a holiday coming soon? You as well as I know that the officer would have me committed in a mental institution. Well, that is my comparison to Columbus Day. Let’s everyone just go out and discover whatever we want that belongs to someone else and get our day not on a calendar but in jail.
