Creative Thanksgiving Traditions and Ideas

Start your own special Thanksgiving traditions with your family that everyone will love. A few simple games and projects will keep kids busy, work off a few extra calories, and fill your home with treasured memories.

Fill Thanksgiving Day with fun projects and family experiences that will make the holiday even more fun. These memory-making ideas will create special memories and keepsakes that will last all year round.

Paper Turkey Ornaments

Keep little hands busy before dinner making special paper “turkeys” from their hand prints. Using construction paper, pencils, and safety scissors, let each child trace its hand on the desired color of paper. Cut out the hand, then decorate as a turkey with smaller pieces of paper, glitter, and colored pencils. Use the thumb for the head and the fingers for tail feathers.

Thankful Chain

Cut slips of paper and place next to each person’s plate, along with a pencil. Have them write down what they’re most thankful for, then share with the group. Use the slips of paper as loops forming a paper chain of “thanks” — store away at the end of the season and reuse next year, adding more memories. Your chain will become a proud display of all the reasons you have to celebrate — and a record of memories from each family member.

Hide and Seek Fest

Work off some of the feast’s calories by hosting a family game of hide-and-seek. Don’t let the little ones dominate the game — team up family members so they have a partner to share their hiding spot (or help them search the whole yard or house). Remember, non-participants automatically volunteer for kitchen cleanup!

Make this Thanksgiving celebration a memorable event with a few traditions that will make the holiday extra-special for the whole family. Whether it’s as simple as a handmade paper ornament or as profound as a chain of memories, each keepsake or experience will be treasured for a lifetime.
