Did You Know About Buy Something Used Day?
January 22nd is buy something used day, come and join us for this green event.
Canada has started a Buy Something Used Day, which I feel should not only be a national day but it should become a universal day for all countries. It is on January 22 nd and the idea was originally inspired by The Reynouzd Festival, but this can be shared by all across the world.
When you buy something used; nothing new was manufactured, the packaging is not new, and absolutely no transportation was required for that product.
Hosting a Buy Something Used Day can be done by anyone in the world; I have listed some creative and interesting ideas. It is held in the winter months, so I am hoping you have some thick skin if you have snow. A warm blanket and hot cocoa should do the trick.
Winter Yard Sale
Who cares if you have to shovel the driveway, dress a bit warmer, and lay out some items on the front yard for others to buy something already used? This sounds like quite a bit of fun actually, with a warm cup of cocoa in your hands and maybe a snow ball fight or two. If you have a clean garage to use, that is another route you could go.
Church Function
Ask your local Church to host a Buy Something Used Day where everyone contributes used goods, and the money could be donated to a charity or used where the money is needed most.
Street Sale
Again this is in the winter months; ask your neighbors how they feel about the entire street participating. Look into the cost of renting a room at your local library as a neighborhood investment. The local libraries in Canada offer the use of a room for a very low cost. If you chip in as a group it might cost you ten dollars each the entire day.
Donate and Shop
Get together with some friends and drop off some donations at your local Good Will, Salvation Army or second hand store. Then treat yourself to a few new but something used items to celebrate the day.
This is only a few suggestions. If you are feeling very positive about this particular investment of a day, you could canvas your city to find out if a festival could happen in your town. One big project you could be quite proud of yourself for starting.
Make sure you mark it down on your calendar for next year, only two months away. January 22nd is a day to be remembered and a day to participate with buying something used.
