East Coast Earthquake Aftershock, 4.4

Thursday was the largest aftershock so far from the major quake that hit the east coast this week. It was a 4.4 and so far there is no report of further damage. Learn to stay safe.

Aftershocks are expected after any earthquake of a major size, like the one that hit the east coast. To date the strongest to hit was on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at 4.4 in Virginia. It was strong enough to shake the residence and cause a certain amount of fear and nervous reaction. It is likely they will continue in the area for several weeks, so prepare yourself now.

The 5.9 earthquake that hit the east coast caused damage to several of our countries nation monuments. The Washington Monument is closed for now until the damage can be checked for safety reasons. The National Cathedral is closed for the moment, but crews are working hard to have it opened by this weekend when a celebration for Martin Luther King, Jr. is to take place.

Safety is a major concern after any earthquake. Check your home and business for any crack in the wall and ceiling that can cause weakness. If they are bad enough, get them fixed or reinforced. If another earthquake were to hit, it could cause the structure to fall at the weakened points.

Be aware when driving anywhere after an earthquake. Cracks or damage to the road could cause damage to your car or a wreck if you are driving at a high speed. Do not take a chance by driving too fast after an earthquake. Continue to check for falling items and damage for up to a month after any quake. Prepare yourself now, in case of a follow up of another major quake.

Do not live in fear of another quake. Continue with normal daily life. No matter where you live or how many quake you have been in, it only takes the right one to instill mental fear. If you are having trouble adjusting back to your normal routine, check with a professional and get advise. Keep your children safe, but help them to have a positive outlook for the future. Teach them what to do at school or anytime you are not in the same location.
