Easy Homemade Halloween Costumes
Why does a Halloween costume have to be elaborate? Every year at Halloween we see images of ghosts, goblins, and witches because THESE are in the true spirit of Halloween. Keep the costume simple and spend little to NO money for this one night of fun!
When my son asked me if he could be a ghost for Halloween, my initial (internal) reaction was that a ghost is just too simple and easy. After thinking about it for a nano-second, I thought, why does it have to be difficult?! Furthermore, if HE is happy, then who really cares, right?! SO, a nano-second later, I replied, “What a great idea!” And there you have it. I save $50 and everyone is happy! Some of the best costumes are the traditional do-it-yourself costumes! Not to mention, they are so rare these days that they are actually UNIQUE!
These are great for children AND adults.
1) GHOST. Easiest of all. Simply cut a hole in an old sheet. Done and Done. For my son, I found a $3 piece of shiny white fabric at the fabric store as we didn’t have an old sheet. White face paint, or white baby powder on the face for extra effect.
2) BLACK CAT. Dress in tight black clothing from head (tight sweatshirt with hood) to toe (black shoes). Attach black felt triangles to a headband, or buy black cat headband at Target or Wal-Mart. Black eyeliner makes great whiskers!
3) WITCH- Flowy black and dark purple clothes from head to tow. Cut the bottom in a zig-zag pattern if you can spare. Moms old out of date flowy skirt works great pulled up under arm pits. Drape sashes, scarves, etc. Add a black witch hat from Halloween store or Target (usually $2 or $3). Green or Purple eyeshadow is fun for effect. Grab a broom from the closet and your off!
4) MUMMY- EASIEST of all by far! Toilet paper, First Aid wraps, and Scotch tape! nuf said
5) SCARY ZOMBIE- Use neutral colored old/disposable clothes with holes (i.e. ripped jeans, ripped flannels). Rub charcoal all over the clothes and face. Mess up hair!
6) VAMPIRE- Black sheet for cape. Black clothes. Baby powder to lighten face. Vampire teeth are usually very inexpensive. Moms red lipstick is a must!
7) DRESS UP- USE THE COSTUMES YOU ALREADY HAVE! I’m not sure about YOUR kids, but mine all have dress-up clothes. Princess dress-up clothes, action figure dress up masks, clothes, dance recital costumes. This year my daughter is going to use her ballet costume which was a mini wedding dress with veil. My total cost will be .50 cents for the Ring Pop!!!
All the savings will provide mommy with GUILT-FREE trips to the coffee shop!!! mmmmmm coffee.
Happy Halloween!!!!!!!!!!!!
