Feast of Saint Michael The Archangel

The 28th and 29th of September.

The town of Basey is surely busier than ever as it celebrates the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel, the town’s most beloved patron. The preparation usually starts at the beginning of the month of September with lots of activities everyday in connection with the town fiesta. The 28th and 29th of the month is the busiest day of them all for at those days every home prepares for a sumptuous meals to be served to their visitors whether old acquaintances or not, they’re all welcome. Reunions usually happen too. My cousin’s birthday happens to be September 28 so his parents named him Michael in honor of the town’s patron saint. There’s always a double celebration for them during his birthday. It’s been ten years since I’ve been there to celebrate the fiesta with my co-Baseynons and I must admit how I miss a lot of the festivities. The Banigan-Kawayan Festival which is a dancing parade which is being participated in by mostly of students from different schools showcasing their talents in dancing with the use of Bamboo and Mats woven by the locals. They are vying for a prize prepared by the Hermanos/Hermanas (sponsors/host of the feast). There are bazaars which offer different products at a cheaper price. There are other contests too; boxing, singing, and games for children. But above of it all is the search for Ms. Guibaysayi. Guibaysayi is a Waray (the locals’ vernacular) word which means “most beautiful”, so as the title suggests, the most beautiful maidens in town were called to join the contest but of course it is not a competition of physical appearance alone but with their inner beauties, talents and intelligence as well. Some Baseynons celebrate the feast even when they’re abroad. It is their way of giving thanks for all the blessings as well as the protection St. Michael is giving them. Though separated by distance, Baseynons will always be one at heart and in faith with their town’s Protector and Savior.
