Festivals in the Orient
A look at Philippine festivities.

The Pearl of the Orient, Philippines, has numerous and memorable festivals all over the land. Tourists from different parts of the world travel for hours to witness these spectacular events.
Traditionally, festivals are warmed up with merry-making, street dances, colorful costumes, and parades as people’s way of thanking their patron saints for providing them good harvest throughout the year.
To summarize, here are few of the most popular in the island.
The Panagbenga Festival. This wonderful event is showered with energetic street dances under hot rays, festive shouting, and parade of flowers designed in giant floats. It is done during the month of February in the Summer Capital of the country, Baguio City or the City of Pines. Its theme concentrates on the preservation of environment particularly the flowers of the Cordillera.

The Carabao Festival. This amazing event is celebrated during the Hispanic feast of San Isidro wherein hundreds of carabaos are made to march and kneel in front of the church like penitents in Pulilan, Bulacan. As early as the morning sunrise, the carabaos are dressed with flowers and cloths, bovines are shaved, and horns are rubbed in oil to shine.

The Sinulog Festival. This biggest and grandest festival takes place in Cebu City to honor and pay homage to the Child Jesus during the month of January. It is done with colorful sights and festive sounds and apart from the main spectacle, there are various trade fairs and product displays to add vibrance to the festivity.

The Kadayawan Festival. This is a week-long festival held every third week of August in Davao City. It began in 1988 as celebration of life and as thanksgiving for the nature’s abundant gifts.
