Five Fun Fall Activities
Experience all the fun the fall season has to offer. Many of the unique or traditional activities below are offered by communities and organizations near you.
Need an excuse to have fun this fall? A local festival, fundraiser, or fall celebration may be just the event to get you into the spirit of the season. A few of the recommendations below are traditional fall favorites or Halloween-inspired festivities perfect for the whole family.
Corn Maze
Get lost in a maze the shape of the Statue of Liberty, a sports logo, or a massive labyrinth — constructed entirely by corn stalks. Corn mazes are growing in popularity, with grown-ups and kids alike eager to find their way through the twists and turns. Themes like haunted houses and treasure hunts are also incorporated by some corn mazes.
Pumpkin Patch
While pumpkins are available everywhere during the fall, the thrill of picking your own from the patch is still unbeatable. A trek to the local pumpkin farm may involve more than just picking the perfect pumpkin — many sites also host carving contests, face painting, food vendors, and other fun family activities.
Farmer’s Harvest
Enjoy freshly harvested produce from local farmers or homemade speciality products available at a fall harvest festival or harvest farmer’s market. Some events are devoted to a specific fruit (like apples and apple-related products) while others feature everything from sweet corn to golden-fried potatoes. Browse for gifts or enjoy a few sweet treats from food vendors, along with live performances, games, or contests.
Pumpkin Throw
Pumpkin tossing, while still confined to certain rural regions, brings out the enthusiasm in many a participant. Using everything from homemade catapults to “group throws”, participants compete to toss their pumpkin as far away as they can. Events often include other fall attractions for those who feel less inclined to smash a pumpkin.
Haunted House
These spooky Halloween standards aren’t always designed for the faint of heart. Whether operated by a historical society, a local charity, or a business specializing in spooks, the thrill of encountering a chainsaw-wielding Frankenstein or gruesome ghost from “The Ring” can’t be beat at Halloween.
