Green Halloween

Going green is no longer optional. You can make your Halloween fun and festive without creating too much waste or consuming too much energy/resources.

Halloween is just around the corner. Children and parents are probably occupied looking for horror costumes and Halloween decors. But did you know that Americans alone spend billions of dollars on Halloween costumes, decors, candies, and pumpkins every year? Imagine all the Halloween wastes after that.

Everyone should enjoy this special occasion, including Mother Earth. Celebrating a “green” Halloween is not really difficult. Here are some suggestions.

  • Recycle, recycle, and recycle. Always recycle your old Halloween costumes and decorations. It is not advisable to buy new stuffs. If your kids need costumes, borrow from friends and relatives instead of purchasing brand new ones.

  • Be creative. Explore your creativity by designing or making your own Halloween costumes /decorations using old newspapers, magazines, and other bio-degradable materials. Don’t throw your old Holloween stuffs, some can be transformed or can be used as component of your new project. And always involve your children in this task; your kids will definitely enjoy it.

  • Healthy treats. Instead of the usual chocolates or candies, try serving healthy treats like biscuits and cold organic juices. This will be a refreshing welcome for tired trick-or-treaters.

  • Leftover pumpkin . Explore your culinary expertise. Don’t throw those pumpkins that you used as Halloween ornaments. Use them for making pumpkin soup or for baking pumpkin bread.

  • Electronic Cards. If you plan to host a Halloween party, use e-invitation cards instead of expensive paper-based cards. You can also greet your friends using e-Halloween cards which you can download for free or you can just design your own using simple computer software.

As a final note, going green is no longer optional. You can make your Halloween fun and festive without creating too much waste or using too much energy/resources. The above tips are simple ways to help our environment and a sure way to save you money.
