Halloween Costumes From Sweat Suits

Need a cheap and easy Halloween costume? The following ideas require no sewing and can be made from a sweat shirt and things around your house.

Pencil  Start with a solid yellow or brown sweat suit and a birthday party hat.  Use paint or markers to color the top two inches of the party hat black.  Color the rest white or light brown.  The hat becomes the “point” of the pencil.  If possible, wear pink shoes for an “eraser”.  These can be cheaply made by spray painting a pair of canvas shoes.  For a treat bag, use a copy machine to blow up a picture of the front of a box of pencils, then attach this picture to an empty cereal box.  Punch holes in the top and add a ribbon to the box for a handle.

2.       Crayon  Start with any color sweat suit and a matching color party hat and shoes.  Using a black marker, draw an oval on the sweatshirt and write the word “CRAYON” sideways in block letters.  Crayons can be great costumes for a large group of siblings or friends; have everyone dress as a different color.  For a treat bag, use a copy machine to blow up a picture of the front of a crayon box, then attach these pictures to an empty cereal box.  Punch holes in the top and add a ribbon to the box for a handle.

3.       Tree  Start by making a number of leaf shapes from construction paper (for a fall tree, use red, yellow, and orange).  Wear brown pants (for a trunk) and a brown, green, or black shirt.  Attach the leaves to the shirt using double sided tape.  Place the leaves randomly, but be sure to cover as much of the shirt as possible.  If desired, add some extra touches to your costume such as a stuffed bird or carry a tree branch.

4.       Tomato  Start with a large red or orange sweatshirt and a second orange or red sweatshirt in your child’s size.  Cut the arms off the larger shirt, and pull the large sweat shirt over the smaller one (like layers).  Superglue, sew, or stichwitch the hems of both shirts together, then fill the space between the shirts with polyester stuffing or dishrags.  Pin a few fake or real leaves in the child’s hair for a “stem”.

5.       Grape  Repeat the above directions but with two purple or green sweat shirts instead of red ones.   Make grape leaf shapes out of construction paper and plue a few to the front of the costume.
