Most people associate Halloween with the Christian holiday – All Saints Day and the Celtic festival – Samhain. The word Halloween may even be a Scottish derivative of – All-Hallows-Even.

  1. Halloween is not celebrated in all countries of the world.
  2. Orange and black are the colors associated with Halloween. Where orange represents Autumn or harvest and black represents darkness and death.
  3. Halloween is considered a secular holiday with no religious significance – by most people.
  4. European immigrants brought Halloween traditions to North America.
  5. Originally turnips were carved with faces to scare away spirits and ghosts on the Samhain holiday.
  6. Pumpkin carving originated in North America.
  7. Candy bars are the most popular treat for trick-or-treaters.
  8. Ancient Celts wore masks and costumes to avoid being recognized as human by meandering spirits.
  9. Pumpkins are a berry in the cucurbitaceae family.
  10. If you have an intense fear of Halloween you are said to have – Samhainophobia.
  11. Halloween is one of the oldest festivals celebrated. It goes back to the ancient Celt – about 2000 years.
  12. Halloween is the second most successful commercial holiday – next to Christmas.
  13. The most popular costumes are usually based on a popular TV movie.
  14. Halloween is traditionally celebrated on October 31 but should October 31 fall on a Sunday, many communities choose to celebrate Halloween on October 30 instead.
  15. Halloween was a time to celebrate the harvest with large gatherings and bonfires.

Generally speaking, Halloween is a combination of festivals and celebrations. Everything from the harvest to meandering spirits has an impact on what Halloween is today.

Most people today consider Halloween a secular holiday. They decorate the house and yard and buy treats to give out to the kids. For most it is simply a harmless day of fun and entertainment.
